Qeneral Battle, Chief Marshal, will be assisted by Capt. K. R. Jones. Mr. J. B. Clark received a letter yes terday from a friend in Beaufort county in which the writer said a severe bail storm passed over the Pantego section on Sunday afternoon, the large hail stones smashing window panes and doing considerable damage. The top was torn off a barn belonging to Mr. Wilkinson, near Pantego. The oyster season is about over. The weather is getting too warm, and the ' festive" bivalve seeks quiet places of settlement in the sounds and lower rivers, to reouperate and brace himself for the next season. His vacant place in the market house will hardly be notioed. though, for green peas and blushing strawberries must have their day now. The Messrs. Blades are having the oapaoity of their saw mill on the south side of Trent river increased. Ne engines and boilers will be put in, and the capacity for making lumber will be twioe as great as it id at present. The lumber industry is probably the meet prosperous business New Berne hap, and, like other manufactories, it is a very great help to the community. In this day, if a town wants to kef p up in the march of progress-, t has to blow its born, and keep on blowing And if a town is a little in the rear of the procession it must blow its own horn mighty loud in order to be heard. And should a town have several horns, they should be in tune, for disoord is unpleasant and rtrangora will not hear it if they can help it. Personal. Mrs. J. P. Brogden, of Trenton, is in the city visiting Mrs. J. M. Howard. Mr. R. H. Berry, Who has been on a business trip to South Carolina, is at home for a day or two. Clement Manly, Esq. The Raleigh Chronicle says: "Mr, Clement Manly, of New Berne, arrived in the oity yesterday. P. H. Pelletier, Eeq., has received a let.er from a Philadelphia firm, in quiring as to what inducements New Berne will offer to secure the establish ment of a knitting mill, which would employ about one hundred bands. Mr. Pelletier has replied, stating the stand ing offer which New Berne makes to any manufacturing enterprise that will locate here. This Is another opportunity the busi ness men of lbs oity bave to secure a manufacturing industry. But one thing sure tho men who are looking for locations for manufacturing plants are not going to force themselves upon os. They will seldom locate in a town where, judging from the actions (or inaction) of the businessmen, they are little wanted. There must be mani fested some desire for these new in- ustries. Capitalists, manufacturing companies, or owners of manufacturing plants, mutt know that we want them to locate here. A lively interest in manufacturing enterprises must be hown. Now, there is no good citizen of New Berne but who desires to see new industries' established here, manu facturing enterpries inaugurated, and successfully conduoted, for all agree that they w ill benefit all of our people. We desire to urge upon the Board of Trade and all the business men the nportanceof giving attention to letters f the character of the one mentioned bove. Let a number of you, gentle men, write to the firm who nave maae inquiries of Mr. Pelletier, showing your nterest in the matter and your desire co secure the location of a knitting mill here. -Tarboro baa a knitting mill, which, we understand, is a paying in dustry. New Berne has all the natural advantages to be asked for the estab lishment of such an enterprise. Mr. Pelletier will furnish the address to those who wish to write. V. B. Curt. The court convened at 10 o'clock yesterday morning. Tbe officers were all present, District Attorney Cook, Assistant Attorney Devereux and Marshal Hill having arrived on Monday night. Tbe grand jury was drawn and Mr. Geo. N.Ives appointed foreman. His Honors charge to the jury was brief, but clear and explicit. No oases were taken up during the morning Bastion. Court met at 3 p m., and the case of United States vs. J. T. Respass, for illioit distilling, was called. This case consumed the entire afternoon. Tbe government was represented by Dis trict Attorneys Cook and Devereux, and the defence by Meters. J. H. Small, of Washington, and L. J. Moore. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty.
