That speaks well but it does not compare with the great amount of good being done in employing the laborers and keeping money in circulation. The new city marshal J. M. Barget has been sworn in and has entered upon his duties. As an executive officer he has filled the poaition in the past ao ceptably to the people of New Berne, and he now has the oonfidenoe and en' dorsement of the community. Tonight is the regular monthly busl nees meeting of the Y. M. C. A. A full attendance is requested as business of more than ordinary importance will come before the organization. Should the chairman of any committee find it impossible for him to attend it is his duty 10 notify some other member of the committee and see that he has a report. Richmond's Celebration. Richmond, Va., May 19. Extensive preparations continue to be made to receivo the military and veterans who will attend the unveiling ceremonies of the Lee .statue, on the 29th inst. Among the distinguished guests who have already signified their intention of being present are Generals Dabney H. Maury, M. C. Butler, James Long- street, Senator John S. Barbonr, Gov ernor Daniel G. Fowle, Colonel Charles Marshall, General Marcus J. Wright. R. L. Walker, Colonel Charles S. Yen able. Generals A. L. Long, Joseph E Johnston, and B. T. Johnston. His fame is a proud heritage of all Southern people, and our whole family feel intensely gratified by the knowledge that a fitting monument has been reared to perpetuate his wis dom and valor in the beloved city that he so long and ably def en led. Sorrow and physical infirmity will prevent my being with you. 1 trust that nothing will mar the grace and dignity or the ceremony over whioh you will presld and to which our Southern people have looked forward with such glad expec totion. POWDER Absolutely Pure. Terrible Disaster. Havana, May 18. At 11 o'clock last night a fire broke out in Yasis' hard ware store. In a short time the flames reached a barrel of powder in the build ing and a terrible explosien followed. The whole structure was blown to pieces, and twenty-two were killed. Among the dead are four firo chiefs In addition to the killed over one hun dred persons were injured. The explosion caused the wildest ex citement throughout the city, and thou sands flocked to the scene of disaster. The Governor General, the Civil Gover nor, and all of the puncipal autbon of the city were promptly on the ground , and did everything in their power to aid the injured and calm the grief stricken relatives of the victims. Several houses adjacent to the wreck ed building were damaged by the ex plosion. Conflicting Sugar Interests. Washington, May, 17. Heavy pres sure is being brought to bear upon the Committee on Ways and Means by individuals to secure modifications of the tariff bill. Perhaps the greatest pressure ia being brought to bear by the contacting sugar interests. Kep resentative McEenna has annonnoed that he will submit a proposition look ing to a cut of 83 per cent in the sugar duties, restoring the dividing standard. The California sugar men will accept this heavy out, rather than have the oountry plan adopted, and recruits are expected from the Southern States. Meanwhile, some of the Western Representatives are preparing to lead a crusade in favor of free sugar, so that the ways and means committee may have to faoe another revolt next week. Murrow and General Dep utv A. O. Patterson, with a posse of nine men, made a raid before day on moonshiners in the southern part of Burke county, and captured five large blockade stills, larger than any govern ment still in this section, and destroyed them, together with one hundred and fifty gallons of whisky and 8,000 gal Ions of beer. Une blookader was cap tured, but managed to escape. The stills were looated in a wild and almost inaccessible part of the oountry. This was the first raid made in that im mediate section in over ten years. The blockaders had been armed and ex peoted the raid for some time, but the officers slipped in on them from the rear and did their work. While de-j stroying the first still some shots were fired, but no one injured. Remonstrance to the Czar. London, May 17. The Universal Re view of London publishes an address to the Czar remonstrating against the out rages upon the Russian exiles in Siberia. The remonstrance is signed by 254 per sons, inoluding members of the House of Lords and Honse of Commons, litterateurs, artists, and other persons of distinction. One hundred and eighty- five of the signers of the remonstrance are also in favor of sending a communi cation to the Government suggesting the propriety of its addressing the Czar's Government through the usual diplq- matio channels on toe sunjeot or the outrages. Mr. Gladstone baa written a letter in oonneotion with this matter, In which he sava that the Government of Russia would be justified in returning any note 'sent to it in regard to the treatment of the exiles with a com munioation calling the attention of the British Government to the brutal slaughter of Irish people at Mitchells town sometime ago, JBjgterioua Murder. Raleigh, N. C, May 19. News of i mysterious assassination came to light here yesterday, which baa o rested profound sensation.. Lemuel Bryan waa shot ana aiiiea eaturaay nignt on tne banks of Neuse river, about four miles east of this city, while starting fishing. The only person with him was a man named Bob Pulley, who fled when the ahota were fired, and says be doe not know who-did the shooting. Washington, May 19. Justice Gray announoed the opinion of the court in favor of the State of North Carolina in the friendly suit between the United States and the State oyer the question bb to the liability of the State for the interest amounting te about $47,000 on certain North Carolina railroad bonds purchased by the government for the Indian fund. There was a severe frost throughout thia seo tion Thursday night and yesterday morninir and extending into Illinois, Ice froze to the thiokuees of a window pane. Vegetables and fruit were seri ously injured. The Senate Yesterday. In the Senate to-day a number of bills were passed, among them a bill appropriating $300,000 for la statue to Gen.
