On last Wednesday, Mr. J.nas Chap- pell, of Oaks Farm, came into the city and bought a side of what is known as Baltimore baoon and carried it out to the farm to supply the table of some hands who were chopping cotton. It was served next morning and Mr. Chap pall family also ate some of it for breakfast. Very shortly after, every body who had eaten the meat was taken with violent heaving and vomiting. Two of them got partially over the bad effects within twenty-four hours, but five others remained deathly sick. Dr. J. B. H. Knight was called in and his patients kept him in a most lively "gal lopade" going from oDe to the other to relieve the violent spasms by which the siok people were constantly being at tacked. He finally succeeded in gettiog them all relieved and they are now rest ing well and all thought to be out cf danger. The citizens of Attempted Assassiuatiou. Roper, N. C, May 26. A bold at tempt at assassination was committed here Saturday night, about ten o'clock. Some unknown person fired a load of buckshot at a party of oolored people standing in front of a shop, seriously wounding four men and one woman. The shooting was done at short range and would have been death to several the gun had not been aimed rather low. The woman in this case is a pretty mulatto about seventeen years old, and is the wife of Lloyd Arnold, who is now serving a term of ten years for killing his wife that hB might marry this wo man, which he did at earliest conve nience after. As soon as he married this last woman his brother Dennis got his wife, whose daughter she was, to prosecute Lloyd for marrying an infant. Failing in this, Dennis next turned de tective and found that his brother had murdered his former wife, and soon after procured his arrest. With Lloyd safe in jail, Dennis supposed that bis wife's pretty daughter would be obe dient to his will. No Booner was her huBband out of the way than admirers flocked about her by the score, and Dennis, finding himself ba tiled at eyery turn, it is thought, is guilty of the shooting. He was arrested Sunday morning and lodged in jail. Convention of Germnti Catholics. Milwaukee, Wis., May 26. The greatest convention of German Catho lics ever held in the west opened here today. Sixty-six societies connected with the Central Catholic Society are represented, and it is calculated that close upon 15,000 adherents of that de nomination from outside points are in the city. This is the first gathering of the kind in the United States, and while its primary objeot is to form a State organization and to elect delegates to the national convention to be held in Baltimore next month, it has a political ae well as lay tignifioance, from the faot that the Bennett law as well as questions relating to the training and education of children are to be consid ered. The delegates assembled this morning and an address of welcome was deliv ered by Mayor Peck and responded to by Hon. H. I. Hage, sr., the Bohemian artist of this city, while in bathing near old Waynesboro, on In e use river, bunday fternoon about is o'clook, occasioned much sincere sorrow in this commu nity, whose good people sympathize deeply with the afflicted father in his sudden and great sorrow. Many people repaired quickly to the scene of the rowning and searcn was at once insti tuted for the body, which was round several hours afterwards, about twenty yards from its going down, up the stream, in an eddy. The funeral took place Monday afternoon at o o'clock from the Baptist church. Rev. J. S. Dill officiating. Goldsboro Argus, Seventy-Seven Chinamen Drowned, San Fbamcisoo, May 26. Capt. Protect the System from Malaria, It ia possible to do this even in regions of country where miasma is most rife, and where the periodic fevers which it causes assume their most formidable types. The immense popularity of Hos- tetter 8 Stomach Bitters is very largely attributable to the fact of its efficacy as a remedy for thills and fever, bilious remittents, and as a preventive of the various forms of malarial disease. In those portions of the West and South where complaintsof this nature prevail, and in tho Tropics, it is particularly es teemed for the protective influence which it exerts: and it has been very widely adopted as a substitute for the dangerous and comparatively in effect ive alkaloid, sulphate of quinine. Pby sicians have not been among tho last to concede its merits, and the emphatic professional indorsements which it has received have added to the reputation it has obtained at home and abroad. Chattanoooa, Tenn., May 24, 1890. Ground was broken to day at Kim ball, the new town in Marion County on the banks of the Tennesse. Not withstanding the fact that the starting of new towns in the Soutii is now of frequent occurrence, yet the unusual importance of this occasion induced Governor Taylor, the State Officials of Tennessee, and many distinguished citizens of this and other States to as semble in its honor. Major Thomas, President of the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis R. R., brought in his private car a party composed of some of the fairest daugh ters of Tennesse, one of whom drew the flag to the top of the stately liberty pole that had been planted on the sum mit of a symmetrical Indian mound which is one of the interesting features of this lovely locality. Prof. Edward Hull, director of the Geological survey of Ireland, threw the first spadeful of earth, and Prof. J. M. Safford, State Geologist of Tennessee, the next. Addresses were made by Gov. Taylor and other distinguished men. The central event of the day was the brief inaugural address of Hon. H. I. Kim ball. Chief Executive manager of this enterprise. In his epigramio style he showed that this event was the Key to unlock the immense treasures of the whole Sequatchee Valley, and he por trayed in glowing terms the vast indus trial development that would result in the establishment of a manufacturing center at this point that would rival the most noted places of the kind in Great Britain and Germany. It is well known in this section that Mr. Kimball invariably accomplishes far more than he promises; therefore his brief address has bad a most magical effect, and it is the universal opinion here that the christening sale of city lots at Kimball, June 10th and 11th, will be, in all respects, the most suo oessful of any yet held, and that the purchasers will chiefly be genuine set tlers who have absolute faith in th en terprise. m2Ttf 183 POWDER Absolutely Pure.
