S. S. Co.'s warehouse at Washington a day or two ago. The fire was a disastrous one, says the Progress. took place on Sunday night. Tbe Progress says: "The fire originated in an old ware house adjacent to the E. C. D. ware house, in which several hundred bales of hay were stored. The tire soon spread to the E. C. D. warehouse, which was also consumed witb a large collection of merchandise that it con tained. Tbe fire then spread to the brick warehouse of the Wiswall prop erty, which was filled with bay, all of hich were burned, and thence to a long wooden wareheuse in which many hogsheads of molasses were stored, a greater portion of which was lost. The hay in the first warehouse was owned by J. & R. U. Havens, and that in the other and the molasses was owned by S. B. Fowle & Son. Several of our merchants are heavy losers by having goods in the L. C Dispatch warehouse, which came on the lest steamer of that line and had not been removed. Among them are (leo, Phillips, E. K. Morton & Co., and otners But for the good work of the fire de nartments. all the wooden residences on Main street would undoubtedly have been ooniumed, as pieoes of burning shingles and other fire-brands were falling thiok and fast everywhere on very dry roofs. The nre is supposea to have originated by spontaneous com bustion." Shipping News. The steamer Vesper, of tbe K. U. D. line, sailed yesterday with full cargo. They are among the first attractions to catch the eye of a stranger or visitor, and the impression h lasting. Did you ever walk down tho streets of a city or town just after a big rain and step in holes of water or bo compelled to pick your wsy out in the street ? If so you were cer tain to put the authorities of that plaoe down as very negligent of their duties or unprogressive and not worthy of the trust they had accepted. To a great extent the future prosperi ty and development of our city is in the hands of her Mayor and Counoilmen and we do not believe that they are men who will allow her interests to suffer.
