This is the Fourth of July, a day which bhould be appropriately otsdrvid by all the people of the United States. We are glad that many of the towns of our own State will "celebrate," and we are sorry that New Berne did not act upon our repeated suggestion that the day be fitly observed here with public reading of the Declaration of Inde- ptndenoe, an oration, fire works, etc. However, tbe day will not pass without recognition. Many of our people will take it as a holiday, and we are expect ing an interesting game of baseball at 5 o'clock between the Elm City Club and Washington Stars. Before the game, at 3:30 o'clock, we are promised athletic sports such as foot racing, etc. , and later there ni'vy bc a display of fireworks. So the af lornoon will be pretty well taken up with amusements. It is generally conceded that the colored population get the most fun out of the "glorious fourth." They all take it a holiday, havo excursions, and go in for a day of pleasure. At llorchead, tl.u day will be ob served in uood style. Mr J. K Hjbin son, of the Goldsboro Aigus, will de liver an oration. Maj E. (J. Ilarrell will read the Declaration of Independ ence and there will be a grand pyro technic display on the sound at night. It is probable that there will be a large number of visitors to Ne Berne today. Ocruc.ke A Semi-Weekly Stt amer from Hew Berne.
