The Electric Lijjht and Power Company re fused to accept that amount in pay ment, and addressed a letter to the boar J ia w hich they affirmed that they had complied with their contract and would make no reduction in their dirges, ins Loara then instructed the Mayor ih j test miiie and ascertain the actual light furnished by the Company. Cor respondence was opened by the City Attorney with tho city of Raleigh, which resulted in engaging Mr. Thomas C. Harris, an expert, to test the lights. Ml. Harris arrived in this city on Thurs day evening, And, as practicable, pro ceeded to make the tests. Mr. Harris removed the glass globes from each light befoie it, because, as he said, the shada detracted fully twenty-five per cent, from the light. With every ad vautago given the Company, the lights were found to be 782 candle power, in stead of 1200 candlo power a stipulated by the contract. With these facta be fore theni, tho board, on last Friday night, declared the contract annulled and proceedod to provide for the future lighting of the city. It is presumed that the Company will stind by their construction of the con tract, and continue the light as it now is: but should the present electrio lights b,.- withdrawn, other means will be found for lighting the city. The annulling of the contract between tho city of New Berne and the New Berne Electric Light and Power Com puny doc.) not necessitate the discon tinuation of electric lights; it only shows that tho board will not consent to pay for any more light than is furn ished, and that no dealing is desired with a company that practices an im position on the city, If the New Berne Electric Light and Power Company satisfies a. jury that they have, complied with their contract the situation will be ohanged. The city seeks to avoid no legitimate re sponeibilitv, and will stand by the right whatever it may be. Wo oannot afford to be without electric lights because they are an im provoment over any other mode. It is the natural light, powerful, brilliant and in keeping with the march of pro gress, but a3 previously stated in these columns, we believe it is to the interost of every city to use gas also in connec tion with the electrio light. In that portion of the city where most business is transacted and lata at night, good lighting is necessary. In residential and suburban places less powerful lighting is amply sufficient sas with a people's party with a 1890. The steamer Manteo leaves Norfolk Monday, Church Saivices Today.
