Senator Edmunds said the
oilier day that "he expected that
it would turn out that on the 30th
of June, 1891, the Treasury would
bo fifty millions short, even if the
duty wero not taken off sugar."
Well, it will never dp to take the
duty off anything. Pile it on and
make the deficit io the treasury as
small as possible.
The press, with hardly an ex
ception, praises the life and laments
tbe death of James Boyle O'Eeiley,
the poet, editor and philanthropist,
who was snch a friend to Ireland.
Two years ago Mr. O'lieiley visited
and explored the Dismal Swamp,
and as a correspondent for the
Boston Herald, gave a most inter
esting and beautifully written ac
count of his trip.
The decision that the fertilizer
tax is unconstitutional is unfortun
ate for North Carolina, however
just it may 6e. This tax was the
source of a revenue of about $40,-
000 a year, which ' has been the
s ipport of tbe State Department oi
Agrienlture and the Agricultural
and Mechanical college. The loss
of this support will cripple to some
extent the progress of these institu
tions.
"It is announced, says the Ral
eigh News and Observer, "that the
old Dismal Swamp Canal is to -be
deepened and improved and re
opened. Tbe Norfolk and North
, Carolina Canal Company has made
a deed to the Holland Trnst Com-
pany for $1,000,000 which sum will
be nsed for that purpose. The move
v will be a most important one lor
the commerce of Eastern Carolina,
and will bring Elizabeth City into
prominence as a commercial point."

claim the title of qaeen ofthe ocean
racers. tThe White Star steamer
Teuton won tbe right to It when
she arrived off Sandy Hook light
Wednesday. She bad made the
trip from Qaeenstown in 5 days, 10
hours and 5 minutes, thus beating
the fastest time on record o days,
19 hours and 18 minutes made by
the fleet Inman liner, by just 13
minutes. It was a famous voyage
from beginning to end, for besides
breaking the record for the west
bound trip, she aho beat time ever
made for a single day's distance,
making a record of 512 miles for
the twenty-four hours ending at
noon last Sunday.
The big newspaper deal which
is being organized in behalf uf
Grover Cleveland, whose friends
are planning lor his renomination
for the Presidency, is inrthcr ad
vanced than most people believe.
The syndicate has already secured
one paper in the Chicago Globe,
and has nearly completed arrange
ments to take possession of another
plant in New York. The Globe
was ostensibly bought by .Mike
McDonald, Jno. A. King and otlier
politicians. After it has Wr-n
nounced that the Globe of Chicago
is out primarily lor Cleveland, the
New York publication will be
placed on the market; then the!
one in Boston and the others in
Washington, Philadelphia, Cincin
nati, and St. Louis as fast as t Ley
can bogottenout. It was positive
ly asserted that ex President Cleve
land, in whose interest the syndi
cate is moving, is fully cognizant
of everything it has done. It is
hoped by Cleveland's friends that
the influence of the papers w ill be
snch as to force Democrat to sun!
out delegations that will vote for
his renomination for the Presidency
by acclamation.

Yesterday we noted some improve
ments in the way of repairing and
paintirg of houses; and our attention
was particularly attracted by the
change in the inside appearance of Dr.
Leineter Duffy's drug stoie. The
painters have been there and beau dried
the shelve;, counters, and all of the in
side work, so that it is really a hand
some tfrug store.
Rev. Edward Bull will exhibit
his samples of wood at the New Berne
Colored Fair; to bo held next week. He
has already a large collection on hand
and is endeavoring to get every variety
that grows in Eastern North Carolina.
His latest addition is a epeoimen of
horse chestnut. It is believed that theie
is but one tree of the kind in the Stale,
and it is growing on Craven street, near
New. It was imported from New Eng
land by the late Dr. Chapman. It ia a
handsome tree and ia in a thriving con
dition.
