The BiUiation in Europe is criti cal. Confidence is wanting in the stability of peaee and preparations for war go on without abatement. It is gratifying to all Democrats to know that lion. A. L. Wilson of West Virginia baa been ro nomi- nited for Congress by acclama tion. The state liepublican committee of New York lield a meeting last Tuesday, at which Harrison, Reed, the Tariff and the Foree bill were endorsed. It is announced that Henry M. Stanley, the African explorer; Mrs. Stanley and her mother, Mrs. Ten nant, will sail for New York on the Tatonic, of the White Star line, next month. Don't say Rogers is an Alliance candidate. He is the Democratic candidate. He is a true Alliance man, but he was a Democrat be fore he joined the Alliance and will be until he dies. Trade prospects are good every where.' Some say it is the result of the tariff. The wise man says it Is because the face of the Lord is to wards bis people, and the land brlngetu forth abundantly. , THE Times says; The sugges . tion that ; Mahone has become a farmer ia evidently based upon his well known skill in watering stock cultivating the negro vote, and reaping the whirlwind. - Mb. The Tarboro Southonor says Edgecomb connty has lost in popu lation since Juno 1880. The exodus did the work. An emigrant agent is there now making preparations to move more of the colored popu lation this fall. One good result ol the departure of the negroes from the East is that the farmers are learning to diversify their crops and to plant such things as require lesa labor than docs col ton. Messrs. Clark & Co., who at present omploy twelve sewing-mnchino oper ativos and manufacture nearly all the ready-made clothing that they handle, supply a number of stores in the vicin ity of New Berne, and find it dilHotilt to keep up with the demand, as what they mauufacturo equals tho Northern made and they can sell clothing of their manufacture cheaper than the import ed. They therefore expeot to havo their machines run by steam, manufac ture on a more extonsivo scale and put drummors on tho road. A sewing machine run by tbo operative makes about 300 stitches per minute, the aver, age by steam is 3,000, though they nan bo run to make 3,000 stitches per min- ute which is ten timos what is ncoom- plished when steam is not used These are some of tho principal im provements now , going on not things of the past but what is actually toting place today, and there aro many minor ones of which we have not spoken.
