We will have a communication to morrow on the New Berne Co operative Manufacturing Company The painters are busily at work on Dr. F. W. Hughes' new house, also on Mrf-Basil Manly 'b rosidenoe. Mr. Joe K. Willis has been making some improvements on his residence and is now having it painted by Mr. E. T. Berry. Mr. B. H. He has just got in a good supply of general hardware bran new and well assorted and makes a good display of it. He is now ready for all Mr. Allen's old customers and as many others as choose to come. The party of gentlemen connected with the new railroad, who were in town, separated yesterday, leaving in various directions. Messrs. Thos. A. and, Wilbur Mclntyre returned to New York; Mr. H. A, Whiting returned to Wilmington1, and 'Mr. Henry E. Knox and"Dr; Ward went back to Onslow county, to the scene of operations on the. railroad. We were pleased to re ceive a call from Mr. Enox yesterday morning. We hope that when they come hack to- New Berne that he and th3 other gentlemen also will call again. Just as he was congratulating himself on being pleasantly fixed he was startled by the command, "Take a teat with the boys, Mr. Holland." We Will not venture an opinion as to what passed through Hugh's mind as he obeyed. Then came tho query, as the Professof reaohed for his class book, 1' What; is! your fait' name, Mr. Hoi and?"3 Tha truth of the situation then iawned upon ; him. V H.a was mistaken for a ewpupilN. ' s A annpunced there was a poblio speaking at the court house last light. It might properly be termed Che fatro- ductory, discussion on the issues that most conspicuously present themselves in this campaign. ' 't The names of the speakers were a sufficient guarantee of a good audlenoe. First, there was a great desire to know what kind of a speech Hon. L. J. Moore would make since he had cast off his radical garment and joined the lines of the Demooratio party. Second, the people who know the name of F. M. Simmons are only too glad to pay him the honor of going out to hear him. Mr. Moore first addressed the audience but the lateness of the hour at which the meeting closed prevents anything more than a general notice. His having been a life-long Repub iican, and one not without honor, he was especially given close attention to discern his objeot and pur Th. pose for becoming a Democrat. he explained in clear and oonciee argu- ment and we believe to the satisfaction f . nn. h h.rf h.r.h wordafnr hi, T?nhi,n fH. fnr whom ho had so ardentlv fonuht and AAi in hi. nBt lifa hnt .inxn nfl hftrl seen such iniquitous laws passed and urged at the last Congress, whereby .h. sn,,.h wa hmiii.to nA ,. A suffer from oppression, be could no longer affiliate with thai party. It was a good speech, Democratic, and warm ly reoeived. In the address of Mr. Simmons the same close observance was given. He imposed a just reproval to thoee who show so much apathy and indifference in politics by failing to register and staying away from the polls. Some of the prinoipal questions defining how the government under Republican rule was so formed as to discriminate against the South in impoverish ing her people and still farther eorichinz the monoDolists and menu facturers of the North were dwelt upon. His remarks on the Alliance were foroible and ingenious, and im pressed the necessity of the healing of any differences that might have oc curred through that organization. Some splendid licks were given for Democ raoy. Personal. Mr. B. B. Davenport left for Norfolk yefterday on a business trip. Deputy Sheriff Samuel Lane went up to his home in the Fort Barnwell neigh borhood yesterday, on a short vaoation. He will try to bag some wild turkeys before returning.
