THE SECOND CONGRESSIONAL DIS TRICT. Hang out yonr banners ! Taere is no such word as surrender. We have no criticism to make on the nomination of Captain Rogers; none on the action of the Elec tive Committee in failing to name his successor. These are of yester day; our concern is with the things of today. We notice that some of the papers in the district are pressing the claims of Captain Eitcbin. We admit all that is claimed for him and echo and re echo his praise. Brave, patriotio and able, he would be a standard bearer worthy of any following ; but he is not a candi date.' He stands in the honored list of North Carolina's sons who cheerfully serve their country in a private station, that the people may reap the reward of their labors. i, Mr. Mewborne is a candidate. It is true that no convention oi Democrats has endorsed his candi dacv. but be declares himself a WW Democrat and enters the field against the Goliah of the Phillis lines. Under whose banner will you fight, Mewborne's or Cheatham's 1 Abatis the question ana the only question. The Alliance is already in the field. Alliance men regard it fit - and nroDer that the mantle of Rogers has fallen on the shoulders of Mewborne, and a prompt move ' ment of all the Democratic forces , of the district may sweep the field ' onrl a-ain f Via viVfnrr. Tt ia latft in the day, but many a time a sunset chares has been crowned with victory. 'There are few decisive months and weeks in human history. It i A ' A ill . . a . - 1 -2 - is tne decisive aay ana me decisive " hoar that fixes the destiny of .men. "'Lei' there be no halting between two opinions, but with one accord . let ns enter the battle and fight for Democratic prlncipleSfgood govern ment and the honorable and decent representation ol this district in the Congress of the United States. Bat t Is asked, what good can re 8c!t from the election of a Pemo cratio Honse of Representatives! It has been well said that "At no time since the first Congress u chosen has it been more important to place a curb on the fnry of parti sanship. Not only the Demo cratic party, bat all lovers of eco nomical and orderly government should take part in sending an anti-Administration majority to th&next House of Representatives." They could not upset the Republi can control, but they could curb and confine it within constitutional bounds. They would hold the keys oi the treasury ; and though they would be too late to arrest immediate spoliation, they could put an end to many proposed schemes of extravagance. BROWER WILL K0T WITHDRAW, Though Already Beaten by Williams, Whose MajorKjr Will Be 2,000. Geeenseobo, N. C, Oct. 21 The report that John M. Brower, the Republican candidate for Con gress in this district, would be taken off the ticket and the name of Charles A. Reynolds, of For sythe, substituted, is without foun dation. Postmaster White, of this city, is a member of the Republican Executivo Committee, and in an interview with your coirespondent today said that no such action had ever been contemplated. "If," said Mr. White, "we cannot elect Brower we cannot elect anybody. We knew that when we nominated him, and we do not contemplate any chaage." Brower is already beaten. UNSAVORY DEVELOPMENT?!, In the joint discussions now be ing held between him and Wil liams, the Democratic nominee, Brower is getting decidedly the worst of it, and recent develop ments as to Brower 's private life at Washington are doing him mnch harm. It is estimated that Wil liams's majority will be at least 2,000. A heated canvass of tuis counv is being made by the coun ty and legislative candidates. The prospects of a sweeping Democratic victory are good. Richmond Dis patch. IMMKNSK Pr UKIEFIHE. A 1,000 Acre Coal Fitld In Dan, t . ef Destruction. MlNNEAPLOLIS, MlNN., Oct. 21. A Pierre, S. HOLES IN II E PUB LI OAN POCKETS Their Most Damaging Lette ri audTele ,rami Handled Carelesily, Chicago, 111., Oct. 31. A Herald special from Omaha says Since the passage of the McEinley bill the State has been given the benefit of wide publication of man afactuers' circulars notifying deal ers of increased prices, owing to in creased tariff. This has had a very depressing effect on the Re publican campaign. Yesterday Congressman Dorsey sent tbe folllowing telegram: M. S. Quay, Beaver Falls, Fa. Have manufacturer quote lower prices, and deny that the MeKinley bill raises prices. If this is not done it will cost thousands of votes in Nebraska." The telegram fell into the hands of a Democrat, who gave it oat for publication, A Test Caae n Michigan. Paw Paw, Micb., Oct. 21.
