SKETCHES AND IVEMS
This is the title of a handsome li: ile
volume from the press of Ureon, Ihnke
and Gregory, Norfolk, Va., and v, ri'.ten
by Mrs. H. Murphy.
Ihe work is not pretentious, yet in
teresting; the proee material is inspired
more especially, by sceneu and inci
dents in Mississippi, Florida and North
Carolina, and is mainly a description id
the social life and peculiarities of th?
people, threaded together in intertjetinx
narrative form, and aro especially kind
and approving.
That portion of the book that i:.'..
with North Carolina starts at Aslifville-,
and by easy stages reaches and takej io.
from mountain to seaboard, the princi
pal towns and cities, reachirjg our own
oity where the author sojourned for
more than a year.
This journey is not a mere tr vcer
description, but introduces an interest
ing character wbo descnbis irrophicaliy
the most saliect features of our Statu
and people, socially, historically,
scenically and commercially. The ref
erences to our own city are of especial
interest to readers of the Joi unal, and
except for an occasional anachrt uirm in
referring to our early hitory are vory
interesting.
There are many well written poems
on a variety of subjects, one being writ
ten especially about New Berne, and it,
together with other references to our
people, is fervid in its praise of their
hospitality and courtesy.
The many kindnesses shown the
author during her residence hero evi
dently made a deep and lasting impres
sion upon a generous and appreciative
nature, and it finds earnest expression
in this volume.
The limit that might be reasonably
expected from the courtesy of the
Journal editor will not permit a notice
of sufficient length to do full justice to
the book, and hence we refer those
wishing to know more of it to Mrs.
Susan F. Stanly, who is the author's
friend and agent, from whom the book
may be procured. X&min-.
