A MAGNIFICENT DISPLAY OF THE
PBODUCrS OF THIS SECTION.
A Splendid Attendance for the First
Say.
The Fair was formally opened jester
day at 11 o'clock. Promptly at that
hour W. W. Claik, Esq., stepped to the
front and after a few appropriate and
pleasing remarks, introduced Dr. John
3. Long, who in a speech of rare beauty
and true eloquence opened the expo
sition in the name of the Governor and
the president of the Association
After the opening exercises the a
sembled crowd began their examine
tion of the exhibits. Many were the
expressions of admiration at their
abundance and fascinating beauty
The exhibit is the best one ever shown
here, and is very creditable. Especially
i8 thj8 the case in the floral department
and in the tMt and beautiful deccra,
tiona in the culinary department
There ia a 8piendid exhibit by mer
chants in hardware, groceries, dry
goods, eto.
The agricultural department is one
that every farmer ought to eee. Go
there and view the remarkable result
of the productiveness of our soil.
The musical department has a choice
rraT ol instruments and is well worthy
lne place it holds.
The space devoted to fine arts and
ladies' fancy work is filled with a be
wildering array of articles both orna
mental and useful.
The taxidermy exhibit ii fine.
The fish and oyster exhibits will
probably be completed today
The game exhibit is varied and at
tracts much attention.
The poultry exhibit was probably
never equalled in the State.
There is a good display of thoiough-
bred cattle.
There is a large number of handsome

have good records; and the races may be
looked forward to as of unusual interest
among those that have been held in
North Carolina,
The Machinery Hall is well filled and
a careful examination of its contents is
both interesting and instructive. The
machines are not all motionless, but
steam creates the power needed and the
busy hum of industry pervades the
building. Here the Gray wood Manu-
f acturing Company are making plates
land dishes. Here, too, one has the
chance of viowinz the process of mak-
ling jugs, vases, etc. Here, also, may
be seen the art of printing, from the
setting of the type to the working of the
press, for it is here that the work is
done on the little newsoaoer that cbron-
ioles the happenings of the Fair.
The Bohemian glass blowers are very
skillful in the manufacture of glass
ornaments
The Galatea is a weird, ehaatly and
startling exhibition and surpasses the
I expectations of visitors.

Editor Journal: The Atlantio Sea
side announces that "a plan is on foot
to have the largest oyster roast the
world has ever seen at the Fish, Oyster
and Game Fair at New Berne next
week." This is news to the officers of
the Fair Association, but if our Beaufort
friends will furnish us a car load of
coons" and some of our enterprising
saw mill men will provide a few cords
of slabs we will see that the said
coons" are roasted in proper etyle.
