No body but the devil will hang out any crape when the present Congress dies. Louisville Courier- Journal. Duties have an effect on prices, and are intended to. Otherwise they would't be imposed. It is ' only in politics that the tariff does not effect prices. In plain every day business the tariff is a tax. "The Republican Senators and Representatives in Washington act on the assumption that there is no bottom to the Treasury of the United States." They have reached the bottom of the Treasury, but theyjare on the way to a place that is bottomless. The Wilmington Star rises and aBks "what good will a protection tariff do the American hen when that Kansas man gets to turning out artificial eggs at three cents a dozen?'' Hens should protest vigorously, and scratch the Repub lican ticket every opportunity. The Democratic party has a proud record, and its essential principles are easy of ennunciation. Let ui remember that the more planks there are in a platform the fewer people can stand on it, the more articles there are in a creed the fewer people will subscribe to it. . Representative Qreenhalqe yesterday introduced a bill to put the Indian Bureau nnder the con trol of tha Civil 8ervice Commis sion. C. R. R , has given it up and taken the position of transfer olerk at Goldsboro for the Atlantic Coast Line. Last night a young man dropped two unstamped letters through the slot into the basket at the postofflce and then turned to the bystanders and asked, "Wbo takes the money here? I want to pay him for sending those letters." The schooner Mattie E. Hiles, which sailed from here sometime ago for the West Indies with shingles, has been heard from. She was at Barbadoes on the 16th inst , where a load of molasses will be loaded for the homeward sail. La, t evening's mail train brought in about 250 passengers, among whom were Oovernor Fowle, State Auditor Sanderlin, and the Goldsboro Rifles, in charge of Capt. W. T. Dortch. The railroad and steamer brought in large crowds in the morning. Among other members of the Press that haye arrived are Felton, of the Atlantic Seaside; Latham, of the Washington Gazette; Ferrell, of the Durham Globe; Robinson, of the Golds boro Argus; Jacobson, of the Washing ton Progress, and Randolph, of the Asheville Citizen. Mr. John Willis, one of the pilots from Hattoras, informs us that the swash buoys at Hatteras have been washed away and lost, and that the bar buoys are all out of place, rendering it dangerous for vessels to pass through Hatteras inlet. We call the attention of the authorities to this matter and urge immediate Attention thereto. Athletic Sports. The prinoipal events at the Fair grounds last night were the athletio sports. There were a number of entries, young men and boys. The four mile race, go as you please, excited the greatest interest, and was won by Mr. H. D. Smith, of Riverdale, but a native of Canada. Mr. Z. V. Butts, of Craven oounty, came out second. In the one hundred yards dash Frank Schelky was the winner, with Carson Adams second. James Simmons came out ahead in the six hundred yards run for boys, followed by Joseph Dudley second. Notice to Acssmble. Today will be AUianoo Day at the Fair. Alliance men in conjunction with the offloers and the directors of the Fair, and the Goldsboro Rifles, will assemble at the court house this morn ing at ten o'clock and form in prooes sion and march down Craven street to South Front, thence to Middle street and Hotel Albert, where the Governor and Auditor Sanderlin will be received and the procession renewed to Broad street and up to the maoadamlzed road, to the Fair grounds, where an address 111 be delivered by Mr. Sanderlin.
