NEGROES are leaving Arkansas for Oklahoma in great numbers. Senator Wilson, of Mar land died suddenly last Tuesday night. It is said that Bismarck will be tried by court martial for his attacks upon the German govern ment. Little Rhode Island seems to have contracted the Democratic majority habit in its most aggra vated form. Absolutely stationary in reli gion we can not be. We must either advance or recede. If chris tians are not growing in grace, they are certainly relapsing. Honor is like the eye which can not suffer the least impurity with out danger. Oj ought to be able to form a very accurate idea of what an 1890 Republican Congress ional nomination meant. Pennsylvania is a great State The Legislature has appropriated $1,000,000 for the improvement of public roads and 9150.000 to defray the expenses of the State exhibit at the World's Fair. The Ohio women are organizing a league to make a campaign on indecent Bhow bills. It is now in order for the bald headed Buck eyes to combine for the purpose of fighting outrageous store bills. Nothing will yield you richer . reward of gladness and a greater , wealth of joy, than faithfully to - cultivate and develop the happier, . warmer, sunnier side of your na ture, that yon may be a blessing to yourself and a blessing to all around you. Schuyler Colfax. As long as we , refuse a warm loving sympathy with Christ's missionary purpose, and hold alooi from earnest co operation with him in missionary enterprise, we shall have a poor, dwarfed spiritual life, and be faithless to the greatest work that God has put into human hands. Rev. George Wilson; The very great prominence and popilarity of Mr. Cleveland has subjected him recently to sharp criticism and wild misrepresenta tion. These neither disturb his well balanced self possession nor materially lessen popular affection lor the great Democrat, and this is creditable to the Democracy. Instead of attempting to dictate the Presidential candidate of the party in 1892, or with inordinate ambition and selfishness seeking renomination, it is beooming trans parent that his whole course, first and last, has been the result of anxiety to redress grievances of the people. Crockett will make a ship ment of radishes today.. H. B. Smith, the Canadian runner, challenges any man in North Carolina to run him on the Fair grounds track from one to twenty miles. "Taken all in all, it is the best Fair I have attended in the State in years," said a gentleman yesterday who has traveled the State for eight years. Among the noted visitors at the Fair was Hon. Wm. Windom, son of the late Secretary of the Treasury. He has come to select the site for the pub lic building. The telegraphic line of the Western Union Telegraphic Company has been finished between Wilmington and Jacksonville. An offioe was established at the latter place this week. The first message to New Berne was received Wednesday, The companies composing tho New Berne fire depaitment paraded at the Fair grounds yesterday morning in uniform with their engines and hose oarriages. They presentee a fine ap pearance and were much admired by the visiters. The Star band accompanied them. Z There was music in the air list night when an hundred yelping dogs were loosed on the Fair grounds in pursuit of Sir Reynard. The chase was hotly contested by mounted horsemen until the midnight prowler was overtaken securely perched in a tree. Mr. Hunter is the king of the chase and revels in the sport. Mr. W. H. Oliver has just received advices that an English steamer bound from Qalveaton. Texas, to Liverpool with five thousand five hundred bales of cotton, is ashore at Ocraooke. The cargo is insured in one of his com panies and he will probably go to the steamer tonight. Of the many compliments paid the Fair, none surpass the following: "Your Fair is deserving of success. I sea no licensed gamblers, or sharpers of tricksters with their gamts to impose on an innocent public" This is what can be expeoted when the right kind of men are at the helm. The stock parade was an interesting feature yestesday. It was witnessed by a great orowd and many were the expressions of pride, that there were so many and such fine oattle in line, exhibited by our stock raisers. We cannot go into patioulars, but suffice it to say that the parade was very ored itable and a complete sucoess. It showed what can be done in stock raising in this section. New Appropriations. The Floral and Agricultural Depart menu. Exhibits of Cotton and Woolen Goods. Magical Instruments. The Floral department presents a scene of bewitching loveliness that would be hard to surpass. Fronting the entranoa ia a handsome temple made in the Roman style of architecture with four Ionio pillars. It represents the temple of the Grecian Goddess Flora the queen of flowers who was said to have a festival beginning about this season. The temple is made of lovely ever greens and flowers. The steps leading to it are covered with growing masses of different kinds, some of them in bloom, with a plentiful sprinkling of daises, growing violets and a boquet of roses rests at the very top. Small birds are seen sporting here and there among the leaves and en shrined in the interior is a handsome doll reprenting "Flora" with a crown of flowers on her head, one hand grasp ing a bequet and the other resting on a calla lily. Misi Carrie Maybew was the one who conceived the idea of this temple and who donated it to the Fair. Mr. Herbert W. Simpson was the archi tect and its attractiveness is a credit to both. In one corner of the room is a stand containing thirty varieties of growing flowers. Other portions are as plenti fully supplied with a grand profusion, there being over a hundred varieties in all, from the modest violet to rare troploal plants, cocoanut, palms, orange trees eto, Thero is a great variety of lovely cut flowers and the whole is oharming. It must be seen to be appreciated. Two rooms of the main building are devoted to the Agricultural depart ment. They are a marvel of vegetable wealth. The finest kinds of specimens of field and garden crops and home' made meat filled all available space In the center of each . room is a vast pyramid formed of produots of the soil, and all around the rooms on the floor and on shelves they are piled in lavish profusion. Huge cabbages. white oollards, mammoth pumpkins and turnips, numerous varieties of sweet potatoes, field peas, beans and oorn; beets, radishes, tobacco; splendid hams, shoulders and sides, lard, sorghum and many other things show ing the surprising fertility of our farms and the skill that is being used in farming. No visitor should fail to ex amine this department. In another room products of quite a diuerent kind gathered from over a large territory are shown It is an exhibit of cotton and woolen goods manufactured in the South. There are stockings here manufactured by the Kinston, Goldsboro and Tarboro mills, a larger variety of bags from the Kerr bag factory, samples of sheeting from the Augusta, J. P. Hill, and Beaver Creek mills Thero are fifty varie ties of ginghams and not less than 100 samples of woolen goods. The Char lottesville woolen mills make a splen did exhibit of the fine oassimeres and other goods they manufacture. With these manufactured goods are samples of the leading varieties of cotton raised in the South and far away Peruvian and Egyptian ootton. This exhibit was gotten up by Mr W. H. Oliver at his own trouble and expense, uoj. rowie pronounced the opinion that it was one of the most interesting collections shown. Mr. O. L. Gaskill makes a large dis play of high-grade organs and pianos, representing eight different first class makes. Mr. R, B. Shaw of Washington and Mr. A. Cohn also make excellent ex hibits in the same line. The playing ef Professor Eugene Wallnau, the pro- fesaional piano tuner on Mr. Cohn's Hardman piano attract considerable attention. (To be continued.) Compliments of the Oxford Day. January 1st. 1091. UNIQUE DROP CHASM. We had a oall today from Prof. H H. Bell, proprietor of the Eureka Scalp Cleaner and Hair Purifier. He has been in Oxford several months, and baa been liberallr patronized by our people. The professor is a progressive and intelligent colored man, and has made a study of bair. Besides telling and applying his remedy, he is an expert maker of hair jewelry. He has just completed a drop charm made of a piece of Hair from Gen. Robert E. Loe's war horse. It is a beautiful and artistio pieoe of work. The hair was given to him by an Oxford lady, whose father secured it In the We. He has also pieoe of Jewelry made from the tail of Stonewall Jackson "Old Sorrel." Prof. Bell deserves . muoh eredit and is deeervedly successful. He Sets a good example for his raoe. GASKILL t0 CO. : Gentlemen I am quite "taken" with the patent ruufller on the "Mehlin'7 Piano Forte, and think it a grand desidoratum in an in strument for practice ; inasmuch as incessant practice, on a piano as powerful as the "Mehlin" becomes very tiresome to hearers. Fractico makes the use of the "muffler" become almost soothing rather than irritating. The finish generally, as well as the almost perfectly constructed "action," is very fine, and I should expect to find it a very durable in strument. Very respectfully, ElCtlAED BERRf, New 13erne, N.
