The new State Apportionment
bill is now a law. and all is well.
The bill has become a law to
prohibit sale of cigarettes to
minors.
"John L. Sullivan was neatly
thumped by a Georgia railroad
man. However, the victor is not a
profestional, and he will not get
much credit for his achievement."
With almost every town in
North Carolina offering special
inducements for manufactories, it
is neeessary for New Berne to put
this locality upon an equality in
that respect. To be on an equality
there is to be far ahead in other
directions.
The special order, in the Legis
latnre on yesterday, was the bill to
extend the Atlantic and North
Caroliaa railroad. We do not
know what action was taken, but
we do know that the defeat of the
bill will be the triumph of the few
over the man j : the sacrifice of the
State to the interest of mammoth
corporations.
CRAVEN is no longer a Senator
ial district, but with Jones,
Carteret, Lenoir, Onslow and
Greene, constitnte the 8th. district
that has two Senators. Craven
extends cordial greetings to her
lister counties and rejoices in the
prospect of Democratic represents
tioninthe State Senate from this
time on to the final consummation
There will be at least four
men in the Senate of the
Fifty-second Congress to support
the financial schemes of the Farm
er's Alliance: Mr. Yance of North
Carolina, Mr. Irby of South Caro
Una, Mr. Gordon ot Georgia, and
Mr. Pfeffer of Kansas. N. Y. San
Very true, bat Vanoe, Irby and
Gordon will fight under Democratic
colors and stand to their posts nn
til the day breaketh.
. Governor Bill is showing his
v mettle. He has refused to recog
- nize a requisition signed by
v Morgan G Bulkely, as Governor o
IJ Connecticut. The Governor said
.. If the people of Conneticut wan
l the body of Fardon, tbey must ask
it through Governor Morris. It is
'c pieoe of effrontery for Bulkely to
aDoear before the Legislature, and
' had : I ' been . in control, instead of
making ft speech, which he had no
rigbt to do, he would have been
occupied in getting out. r He holds
' oossession of the Executive eham
: ber today by force and by.virtje of
the Chandler and "Tom" iseea
spirit of forcible ursurpation."
We, in common with the people
of Eastern North Carolina gener
ally, tender grateful thanks to the
gentlemen of the press of this State
for the very complimentary notices
of the fourth Annnal Exposition
of the East Carolina Fish, Oyster,
Game and Industrial Association
that have appeared in their col
umns. While the Exposition was
richly entitled to the highest praise,
the words of commendation, which
have been and are to be spoken,
will be enshrined in sacred memor
ies, as commemorative of the
generosity and nobility of the
newspaper fraternity in the old
North.State.

THE FAIR.
Fish sad SeU-Llve Stock and Poultry
Departments Exhibits of Busi
ness Houses Comments.
Among the epeoial exhibits secured
by Mr. Ives for his department were
blocks of ice with fish frozen in them
sent by the Crystal Ioe Company of
Elizabeth City. There were also gill
ing nets, hauling seines, fykes, and
other apparatus used in fishing. These
were furnished by the American Net
and Twine Company to add to the
interest of the Fair.
The lira stock department showed
up remarkably well in standard and
thoroughbred horsss, also in fine mulss,
jacks and ponies. The choicest breeds
of cattle, sheep and goats were well
represented by superior specimeos of
both full blood and grades.
The surpassing excellence of the
poultry department in the number of
breeds and the high quality of the fowls
was a delightful surprise to poultry
men and admirers of the feathered
tribe. Of chickens there were bantams,
games, frizzles, erminettes, Hamburgs,
Wyandottes, Plymouth Rocks, Lang
shans, Cochins, etc; white and bronze
turkeys; Toulose and Bremen geese;
Pekin and other breeds of ducks, pea
fowls, eto. Tne massive Coohins, of
both the buff, white and partridge
varieties, and the Langshans are mag
nificent. The difference between them
and the smaller breeds is strikingly
shown in the exhibit made by Wood&

Closing Bemarks on the Fair.
Yesterday was the last day of the
fourth successful exposition of the
East Carolina Fish, Oyster. Game and
Industrial Association. It does us
good today to behold what magnificent
proportions tho "New Berne Fair" of
1838 has developed into. About five
years ago the New Berne Journal and
a few leading men of the city put the
ball in motion. Not immediately, but
soon, the idea of having annual exhibi
tions of the resources of the East
gained favor among the people, and the
unfaltering zeal of the originators
seemed gradually to take hold of the
leading men of all classes, and the
noble women, until now the people of
this seotion are as one for the success of
the Fair. The exposition has been
larger and better each succeeding year,
new features have been added, its
scope and influence has grown wider
and wider, its tuccess greater, until
now, who can estimate the good that
has been done and is being done for
New Berne, for the East and for the
State ? We have not room to speculate
upon this. But let us say that this has
been the greatest Fair yet held. This
year a grand stand has been built, an
excellent race track made and other
new features of less importance in
troduced, the aggregate of exhibits is
larger, and the Fair as a whole has
never been surpassed in the State.
The success of our Fair has been and
is due, directly, to the managers.
Never was an organization more fortu
nate in the selection of its officers
indirectly it is due to the lively interest
manifested by the people of this section
and w, miht . of the entire Sute
The managers of this Fair haye exer

I have tried Duffy's cough Mixture and
take pleasure in recommending It because
1 believe It will do all that la claimed for tt
by Mr. Dully, the proprietor, who Is a drug
gist of long experience and a gentleman of
highest Integrity. I do not believe he would
advertise anything that was not exception
ally good. This remedy has certainly an
swered the purpote in my case. It cured a
cold, an obstinate cold 1 had, after I had
tried a number of the principal cough rem
edies without hcnelit.
