A drummer quietly rode in town yesterday in what was, a few hours previous, a handsome trim fitting dress' suit, but now, instead of a Sunday dyke, it more resembled a "poker-dot," and spectators, who failed to view it closely, thought it only the "latest agony." He had been pitched over the head of his horse into a big mud puddle and was quite successful in coming out so uniformly speckled, considering the very brief process. The drummer had been out riding in company with anotner one of the pro fession, and when galloping over a bridge his horse stepped in a hole and went down, landing the commercial tourist in tbe biggest mud hole on the whole route. Fortunately for the gentleman an old colored man lived near by where he retired to re-make his toilet, but North Carolina mud is too adhesive to get elear of at once and so he was com pelled to ride back in tbe city eus- picioned as out in a new spring style. We have repeatedly noted about bad bridges on the roads near New Berne and they ought to be remedied and kept in good condition. Are You SaviDg Any Money As the Days Go By? A small child or a baby carriage could scarcely be gotten out of the way in time to prevent an accident if surprised by a vehicle at such a place at the rate at which they are sometimes driven. We have several times heard of narrow escapes. Some serious accidents have occurred in the past, as our readers know. and a colored woman was knocked down on Broad street Monday by a vehicle driven by a coloied man. Happily, how ever, she sustained hut little lniurv. Drivers remember and respect the rights of those on foot. The Mayor requests us to say: The man, woman, or child who is on a pub- lio crossing has the right of way in preference to the driver of a vehicle. Drivers must observe this and aot ac cordingly. All drivers must "slow up" at crossings. Account of the Fair Not Full. Our Fair has assumed immense pro portions, and it is difficult for one who attempted a write-up of it to avoid passing by many interesting portions unintentionally. In additiion to that, the size of the Journal psrmits only so muoh matter to go in daily. During the entiie Fair we left out personals, shipping and some other news that we would have given in an ordinary time, that we might have more spaoe to devote to the Fair. We gave it as much room as possible. Still there was much in regard to it that we failed to get in.
