Battle, former pastor of the New Berne Baptist church, who is now located in Wilson, and of those of his father Qen. C. A. Battle, the esteemed Mayor of this city. Their natural abilities and educational accomplishments are duly appreciated elsewhere as well as in New Berne, as tho following extracts show The first is taken from tho Tarboro Southerner and was elicited by Rev. II W. Battle's recent delivery of a sermon there. It says: "His big brainpower, completed with great eloquence, has given this divino an extensive aud well deserved reputation. W. M. Watson, Seo. and Treas. Texas Maintaining Her Sovereignty. Austin, March 23. --The State of Texas owns and runs a sugar farm worked by convicts. Recently a bill was passed by the Legislature to aocept tbe 2 eent bounty under the'McKinley bill. Gov ernor Hogg vetoed it. The vote closed as follows: "The State is sovereign of her affairs and cannot be disturbed in the legiti mate exeroices of her prerogatives. If she desires to raiie sugar by oonviot labor, under no circumstances could she, with propriety, ask or accept from any Government a license to do so. Nor could she ycild tho supervision of ber affairs to any officer not subordi nate to her own laws. To do so in one instance would lead to another and finally to supervision by the Federal Government over ber cotton patches, wheat fields, stock ranches, lumber yards and factories. Precedents by Government usurpation became strong er than law; they are more difficult to overthrow. When they are erected on the destruction of the Constitution by a law like the Bounty act, the wrong produced them strengthens, as the fruits of orime spread, until they be came fastened for ever on the people. For my part, I slnll protest and begin to strike now while the precedent is new. For no sum can the State afford to sacrifice principle or to imperil ber sovereign rights:" DETECTIVE O'MALLY.
