A warning to last young men is famished in the life of Alcide Valdora, a yonng Greek, who four years ago was left $2,000,000. The yonng man squandered $500,000 " annually and then came penniless to these shores for work. He is now a waiter in a New York res taurant. Valdora is finely educated, speaking seven languages fluently, t The injustice of the late census is shown by Mr. Mills, of Texas, in the following extract irom his admirable article, in the Forum, on ; a defective census. Mr. Mills says: 1 ''Texas is deprived, by the incorrect returns, of at least three represen tatives in Congress and three votes in the electoral college. Estimating - the total population by the same ratio of increase of children within given ages, Alabama lobes 240,000, Tennessee and North Carolina 170,000 eacb, and Virginia, Ken tucky and Louisiana 100,000 each. In the State) of the North and .West ths federal census exceeds ' ths school census by about 800,000, while in those of the South ths school census exceeds the federal census by 1,500,000. In view of the almost universal misunderstanding in this, State of the meaning of the words "fair" I and "clear" as used by the Weath er Bureau we ' think ! It is the duty of every voter to attend the primary meetings tonight and express his preference as to who he wants to represent his ward in the city council during the coming year. "Speak now or forever after hold your peace." The Raleigh correspondent of the Wilmington Messenger says the South ern Exposition to be held at Raleigh this fall is to be liberally advertised. A $5,000 contract for lithographing has bean awarded to a Richmond house. In all probability visitors will attend from all parts of the Union. Every Southern state is to participate. North Carolina ought tj bestir herself in time, so that her princely resources may be seen of all, and this section of the state ought to get up a good exhibit. The exposition affords a grand opportunity to attract the notice of many thousands and it ought to be improved to the utmost. Etistor Elections at Christ Church. The Board of Trustees of the New Berne Academy have confirmed the action of the committe in selling ths lot on the corner of Pollook and Craven streets to the U. S. Government for ths pnblio building and they re-appointed the tame committee to perfect arrange menta and get the lot in proper fix for the Government. While we think that as a rule it is advisable for the academy to retain in its possession the property belonging to it, as real estate, it is one of the safest forms of investment and we belie vs that the trustees aoted wisely in effect ing this sals and that ths money properly handled oan be made to yield a large income and be of more tervios to the cause of education than oonld have been obtained from this pro perty. Streets in many place3 were entiroly submerged and much damage was done to farming lands. The Puzzle About Easter. No one person in ten can tell you why it is that Christmas, the day cele brated as our Savior's birthday, always falls on the earns day of the month, while Easter, the day upon which we celebrate His resurrection, changes every year. In giving a solution of this riddle, the first point to be considered is this: Christ was cruoified on Friday, the 14th day of the Jewish month Nisan, and rose from the grave on the following Sunday. The 14th day of Nisan was tie Jewish "Passover," ths day observ ed by them in commemoration of the sprinkling ol their door-posts with the blood of ths pasohal lamb on ths night wbnthe "destroying Antel" passed over the dwellings of the Israelites, but imotej ths first-born of the Egyptian. As the Tear of the Jews is a lunar rear. and the 14th of Nisan is always a full- moon day, the Christian church, regard ing the observance of the crucifixion of Christ by a snbstitute for the old PsBsover'of the Jews, determined Easter by the rules for reckoning the Jewish eolesiastical year: Christmas, intended to commemorate the birth of Christ, had no connection with ths ritual of the old ohuroh. and like dozens of other movable feast days, of the Church of Rome, many of them birthdays of saints, it was finally ssttlsd khat it should be observed on a given dav or the common calendar. Coming down to the word itself. "Eas ter'' is from the German "Ostern" (rising). The English name is probably derived from "Easter," the Teutonic goddess of Spring, whose festival occurred at about the same time as the Jewish Passover." The time for oelebrating Easter was a subject which gave rise to many heat ed disoussions aunng tns early days of Christianity. The question was fully considered and finally settled by the Council of Nios, in the year 825. by adopting the rule which makes Easter day the first Sunday after the first full moon after March 21. By this arrange ment or things master may come as early as lfarch 32, or as lata as April, ao. exchange. Garantasd Care far La Grlpps. Daffy, Drug STATE S. S. CONTENTION. Interesting Session Held at Fayette- vllle. New Berne Selected for 1892. The State Sunday School convention passed with more to give it a place of fond recollections in the hearts of those who attended than is often the case with such meetings. Not a discordant note was sounded during the entire session not even a pebble was thrown into the smooth waters of sympathy, love and good will that caused the slightest ripple upon their surface. fatty lines were not seen, denomina tional differences were seemingly forgotten, and all entered heartily into one grand rally of the Sunday School forces for Christ. To take the obildren of ths work and teach them for Christ seemed to bo the all absorbing thought of all the speakers. No grander, no more eloquent tributes to the Bible were ever given by uninspired men than were paid by many who spoke during the convention. Every one seemed to feel that the all important thing to be done in order to win souls for Christ is, to teach the Bible. Men stood hand t6 hand and heart to heart in the thought of a grand and glorious conquest of the world for Christ. Many were the prayers that went up to a kind Heavenly Father in the name of Christ that the union prayer of the Saviour might speedily be answered. Few, if any, more profitable meetings were ever held in North Carolina. The good accomplished was not for a day, but in its influsnoeand results it will be for eternity. We look upon the organ ization of the State Sunday School convention in North Carolina as the planting of the mustard seed of Sunday School interest, and wo expect at no distant day to see it developed into a tree of mammoth growth stretching its branches throughout the length and breadth of our State, bring joy and glad ness to everv heart. By a unanimous vote it will be held in New Berne in 1892. We are glad to have such bodies come to our city it will do us all good, and we Bball wait with pleasant memories of the Fayette ville session and with fond anticipation of the New Berne session. The old historic city of Elms will open its arms and bid you a hearty welcome to its homes. The executive committee, I presume will appoint the time of hold ing the meeting and I am quite sure this committee would be glad to know what month would be the most oppor tune for the people hero. Can we not have an expression of the citizens on this matter How would September U2 suit t Craven County will be expected to pay twenty-hve dollars to help defray the expenses of the State organization. So do-not wait, brethren, come up and lets pay it right away. It will be but a pittance for each if all who are inter fasted in the Sunday Sohool work will come up and pay, I. L.
