Bell, the judioial grist to be turned out Promptly at 10 a.m. Mayor Manly ap peared, and after a short conference with the officer in charge took his seat. The cause of the throng not to say the crowd was fully explained when the announcement was made that the city of New Berne was up in arms, so to speak, against Lillie Bright for as sault and battery. Lillie sat as composedly as could be expected, just in rear and to the right of her counsel, Mr. L, J. Moore. She had not the harmsonte appearance that one would look for under the ciroum stances. In fact she was bright, if not cheerful, and but for an occasional nervous manipulation of her ring-laden fingers one would have mistaken her for a witness in the case or an innocent spectator. The first witness on the stand was Hettie Jeffroy nee Bragg. Hsttie was in earnest in statement of the case, and Miller, Riohardson, Oden and Craw ford present. The bond of W. D. Wallace, Tax Collector and Clerk, wss presented and accepted. The bond of J. T. Lewis, Marshal, was presented and accepted. The bond of H. J. Lovick, Treasurer, was presented and accepted. Hettie was amply provided with self- confidence and exhibited no uneasiness at'the perplexing questions that an in genious counsellor might put to her, but promptly and emphatically an swered them. All the witnesses testi fied to the same effect, and Dr. Prim rose, wbo dressed nettle s wounas, pronounced them not serious, but the wounds rather substantiated the charge that a deadly weapon to wit, a pocket knife, had been used by Lillie.
