In a word the truo patriotism is the pa triotism of to-day. This Union is now welded iu bonds stronger and more indissoluble than it has ever known. The foes who would strike it down are not the men who wore the gray. They are not these who rear columns in honor of the leaders of the Lost Cause. The conviction seems to be set tling in the minds of the Kepubli can leaders of the second rank that the party will not be able to take Blaine lor its candidate in 1892, and that it will not take Harrison. The leaders of the first rank Clarkson, Dudley , and . Qaay, for exampleyielded to this conviction long ago. As a matter of course there will .continue to be Blaine . talk and Harrison talk, but the talk of each kind will undoubtedly be greatly modified as time goes by , and the number of "wise ones" Increases. Cutler, which showed marked proficiency in its members. The closing exercises of the New Berne Qraded School will take place on Friday, in the old Academy building, with recitations, declamation and ialogue. The regular school hours, from 9 a m. to 2:30 pm., will be observed. The steamer Trent brought in a ship ment of potatoes yesterday fromKer shaw, among which was a sample lot sent the Journal. They were raised by Mr. R. D. Bodges, and are of extraor inary sizs and fine proportion. Mr, Hodges raised about a thousand barrels of them, and received good prioes. The news from truck still continues oheering, Palmer says: "Beans- thirds green $1.0(1 to $1.75, wax $1.00 to $1.50-half barrels $1.75 to $2.00; potatoes $5.00 to $5.50," F. S. Gibson of Philadelphia quotes potatoes firm and heavy demand at $5, and T. H. Kepner & Co., of Baltimore, $5 to $5 50. The various churches of the oity have agieed to omit their regular prayer meetiog in order to give their congre gations an opportunity to attend the services at the Methodist church and hear the Baccalaurate sermon of the Collegiate Institute which will be preached by Dr. Carter, pastor of the First Baytist ohuroh of Raleigh. A sudden stopping of the truok train yesterday, when about seven miles from New Berne, caused Mr. Clinton Smith, who was standing up billing truok, to fall and sustain such painful injuries about his hip, that he was brought back to his home in this city by an engine that was passing. Examina tion, however, showed that no bone was broken, and it is hoped that Mr. Smith will soon be around as usual. The Baptist picnio was well attended They got back soon after eight o'clook last night, and all report having had a delightful time. It was raining.when they arrived at Morehead, bo arrange ments were made and dinner taken in the large hall over Mr. Daniel Ball's store. The clouds soon passed away, however, and the excursionists gave thomselves up to the various pleasures abounding at the seaside some sailing, some visiting the surf (a number went in), some went over to Beaufort, others to the banks, etc, and not an. incident occurred to mar their enjoyment. An interested audienos of parents of the pupils and other friends of- the school were agreeably entertained at the theatre Tuesday evening for about an hour and a half by the set of exer cises then given by the New Berne Collegiate Institute. The stage was filled with pupils in the opening song, "The Holiday,'' acd it was sang nicely with full chorus, and then little Close Barker made a pleasant speech of welcome, and Thomas Roberts followed with an amusing recitation. Two good recitations, "Bill Mason's Ride" and "Custer's Last Charge," were spoken respectively by Miss Lilian Fowler and Benson Lane, and Mies Mamie Hay delighted her auditors by an excellent rendition of that ludicrous piece. "The Sale of Old Bachelors," and Blount Sm ith declaimed "Virgin iua,"invery good style. The instru mental duet by Misaos Rosa Dail and Katie Daniels was'aocurately executed and well received. The grand feature of the evening, "A May Day Celebration," crowning the queen and rendering tributes of various kinds, was naxt on the pro gramme. It was participated in by tbirty-four little girls and boys of the primary department, prettily and strikingly costumed to impersonate various characters and the precision with which each one carried out bis or her assigned part was remarkable in children of such tender age. Careful and judioious preparation had been made to add to the attractions of the rendition by having appropriate sur roundings and the effort met with abundant success. The queen was seated on a pretty throne surmounted by a beautiful arch of evergreens and blossomes interwoven, and evergreen trees from the forest stood at either side and other decorations of a like character were suitably plaoed at other points on the Btsge, all heightening the effect. Miss Lena Hinds, daughter ot Mr. J. M. Hines, was the queen. She was crowned by Frank Willis, son of Rev. R. A. Willis, and presented with her sceptre by Alfred GaBkins. At the conclusion of the May day oelebration M. R. Howard declaimed "The Fireman's Rescue" in a thrilling manner, and there were admirable selections read by Clarenoe Miller and Miss Pearl Wallaoe. After deolama tions on "The Nobility of Lbor"by H. N. Roper, and "The Trusty Boy" by Fred Whitty, a vocal duet, "Dost thou Love Me, Sister Ruth," waB so nioely sung by Thomas Roberts and Miss Laura Suter, in quaker oostume, that it was repeated on being called for again by the audience. jonnny girdman, with clear enun ciation and appropriate gestures, de Personal. D. line from a visit to her daughter, Mrs. Ed mund Strudwick, of Norfolk; and Mr. B. F. Pickles and bride came in on the same steamer en route to their home at Oriental. The steamer Neuse took out the fol lowing passengers: Messrs. R. H. Askew, of Elizabeth City, and W. S. Baum, of Manteo, pupils of James Mili tary School at Grifton, returning home; Mr, F. W. Adams, president of the Bergner & Engel Brewing Company, returning to his home in Philadelphia from a business trip to the city: and Mr. Sam'l Sanderler, of Norfolk, re turning home from a pleasure trip, "Fine Feathers make fine birds. The last declamation was by B, H Melton. He appeared perfectly at ease as he faced the audience and did very well indeed. Then came a round 'Hark to the Bugle's Call" in four parte, sung by a stage full of the stu dents. It was splendid. The exercises concluded with a fine Indian club drill. It was participated in by nine of the boys, viz: David Congdon, Romulua Nunn, Paul Dil lingham, F. Lumpkina, Thomas Kehoo Ferdinand Ulricb, Willie Salter, J Congdon and Ed. Adams. They drilled unitedly, dexterously and with extra ordinary precision in graceful and com plicated manoeuvers and this feature made a pleasing variation from tho literary exeroises. The drill .being the conclusion the audience departod for thsir homes well pleased with the evening entertain ment. Some Potatoes. Another big day on trucking. The steamer Neuse of the E. C. D. line took out 3,000 paokages and the railroad be tween 8,000 and 9,000 in round num bers a total of 12,000. The discharge from my nose was very offensive, and I used various advertised remedies without benefit until finally the use of B. B. B. entirely cured me. I am proud to re commend a blood remedy with such powerful curative virtue." B. O. Kinard&Son, Towaliga, Ga., writes: "We induced a neighbor to try B. B.
