The Democrats carried the elec tion in Utah. Birmingham Ala., in to have a million dollar steel plant. FlFTTrFlVE hundred Italians sailed for America last week. Prominent members of the Al liance in Kansas are coming out strongly against the Sub treasury. The Treasurer at Washington 'has sent to the West $2,700,000 in small notes to be used in moving the crops. The Kansas farmers will not agree to keep ont of politics until they are ont of debt. There is evidently a long fight ahead. San Domingo has decided to admit "American wind-mills dnty free, Hero is an opportunity to export our surplus stock of spell binders. The. Secretary of the Treasury claims that there is more money per capita in circulation in the United States than was ever known in the history of the government. Now that Quay and Dndley have severed their connection with the Republican National Committee, it Is stated in politioal circles in Washington that they will at once pnt on foot a movement to knock Harrison ont of a renomination for the Presidency. We endorse with all onr heart a reeent writer who speaking oi Southern girls, says you may call her life narrow perhaps it is but fenced around with care and con slderation as it is she is happier in it than those women who are not guarded by even a railing of passing thought. Women like her, men love her, and in time of war or in peace she Is the strongest power of ' the South, that sweet-voiced, gentle, - womanly creature that we call the Southern girl. Norfolk Virginian. Both the Governor and Lieute v nant Governor . of Nebraska have been caught ont of the State, and the President of the Senate, an Alliance - man, assumes the Gov ernorship, and threatens to call an extra session of the Legislature to pass some good Alliance laws. The Kebuplicans are panic stricken and .- are telegraphing everywhere" lor the Governor or Lieutenant Gover nor to return and redeem the State from Alliance ' usurpation. Wil Messenger. uradually developments are being made in Southern industries, and one ot the moat important Is the opening of the Bessemer Steel Workr at Sparrow's Point, below Baltimore. These works are the largest steel rail works to? the world. ' They, have a capaoity of 600,000 tons a year, a full third of the total annnal Bessemer works of Great Britain; Here will be found a market for much of the mineral products of the South, and well taoy we say, "The good work goes bravely on." Watson is erecting a dwel ling on Hetcalf street adjoining his resldenoe. The cotton and oorn orops are fine so far, but the continuous rains are ex- oiting feelings of uneasiness. The Elisabeth City Economist sajs the prospects for a successful exhibition of the Elizabeth City Fair was never better. The regular annual meeting of the stockholders of the A. & N. C- R. R. will be held at Morehead on the 24th of September. The Washington Progress wants to know who can beat a otioumber raised by Mr. Chas. Alligood. It measures 19 inches lone, 101 Inches around and weigh'a 4i pounds. In another column will be found the schedule of the special train whioh will give stockholders and their families a free ride to Morehead and return on Tuesday, the 18th, lost. At the late township mooting of the National Sunday Sohool Union, held at Kitt Swamp, Ernul P. O., the Kitt Swamp Sunday School reported their number of soholars enlisted as 41, the Antiooh Bchool 76 and the Friendship school 104. The desperate efforts of a vicious j oung bull near the corner of Pollock and Metoalf streets, as he was being taken to the slaughter pen, created quite a commotion and attracted the attention of a good sized orowd before he yielded to those in charge and pro ceeded to bis fate. The Kineton Free Press says that Mr. Shade Jackson, of Lenoir oounty.Las already cured five barns of tobacco and is now ouring several others, while in the western part of the State tobacco is not near crown yet. The conoluBion reached is that this section far surpasses any other for tobacco culture. The Elizabeth City correspondent of the Norfolk Virginian in writing to that paper of the removal of Mr. Scheeltz and family to New Berne, says that ''with his removal Elizabeth City loses a good and respeoted citizen." Mr. Scheeltz has for many years been a dealer in dry goods, notions, etc, in El!zibeth City and as our readers know well continue the business here. Gov. Holt has decided that the States, appropriation of $25,000 to the World's Exposition oannot be legally used. This is quite a bio w to the com missioners, and the Governor now recommends a Urge private subscrip tion by the citizens of the State as the only means of making an exhibit. Several cities will make heavy approp riations in order to have the exhibit. Rev, R, A. Willis' report of Centenary M. E, Churoh to Quarterly Conference showed that there was not a single death in the membership of 000 during the proceeding three months. . This is a very good showing for the healthful nesa of New Berne but Mr. Willis in forms us that the statement ean be made even stronger as it has been over five months sinoe there was a death in the membership of the ohuroh and there has also been very little '.slokneas in the meantine. Daniels, lately elected instructor of pbysioal culture at Trinity College, Durham, who is now taking a oouree of training at Harvard College preparatory to entering upon the duties of that position seems to be taking the lead in athletic contests North as he did in this State. The Boston Times tells of the Riverside Boat Club's largely attended annual pionioatSpy pond last Saturday. In the list of winners in the athletic events, Mr. Daniels is plaoed at the head with half a dozen others mention ed afterwards. North Carolina is well represented among the students now taking the course of physical training at Harvard University. Late Ken tucky election returns are favorable in every instance to the farmers, and there ts no longer any doubt that they will oontrol the next legislature. They are not all Alliance or People a party men, however, although the People's party has surprised the Democrats by elect ing no less than thirteen of its candi dates. The political complexion of the house is: Demoorats, 08; Republicans, 17; People's party, 13; Independent Democrat, 1, and one distriot doubtful. The farmers of all parties number fifty six, besides several country merchants and teaohers whose sympathies are in the same direction. The farmers, most of whom are Alli ance men, will have a majority in the Democratio oauous. There will be sixty-eight members of the Democratio oauous, not oounting the Independent Democrat, whose admission to the oauous is doubtful, and thirty-nine of tnem are farmers. The farmers can, if they like, eleot every offloer of the house from the speaker down. Brown's (Dem.) plurality for eover- nor is between 25,000 to 80.000. as com pared with 16,000 for Governor Buok ner at the last gubernatorial eleotion and with 83,000 at the last treasurer's eleotion. Tho U. A. R. in Session. Detroit, Aug. 6. The twenty-fifth annual encampment of the Grand Army of the Republio met in formal session this morning in the mammoth hall set apart for the business deliberations ot the veterans. The race question might be preoipitated in the deliberations at any moment and become the eubjoot of aorimonious discussion, and this im pending problem combined to heighten general interest in the proceedings. The declaration of the commander-in-chief in favor of the establishment of departments of the G. A. R. for ne gro veterans oreated a decided sensa tion. It was hardly expected that he would so openly favor the separation of the races, and the whites of Louisiana and Mississippi were overjoyed at his decisive recommendations. New Patrol Boat. The Steamer "Lillie." of Philadel phia, Capt, Adam Warner, master, ar rived in port Friday morning. This oraft has been purchased by the Shell run uommission as patrol boat for protecting the oysters interests of the state. Warner demonstrated his good judgment In the seleotion of this boat, as she is so suitably built for the purpose, being very fast and drawing only four feet of water. Washington rrogress.
