Owing to the breaking of the main shaft at the large Stimson Lumber Mill, it will have to shut down for a short time. The Goldsboro Argus ssys the steam er Stidy, built by Mr. O. R. Rand, sr., to ply the waters of the Neuee between Goldsboro, Seven Springs, Kinston and New Berne, is now ready for business, and only awaits the arrival of the U. S. Inspector to examine her engines and license her engineer before beginning. The colored Fair Association have engaged the Qolden Link and Star Brass Bands to furnish muslo during the Fair, but it has been found that t other bands, some from quite a distance, have an inclination to attend the Fair, and as an inoentive for them to do so it has been decided to offer speoial pre miums for the best band attending from outside the oity. A subscription paper is being oiienlated to raise a fund for these premiums. Some miscreants seem determined to subject the Electrio Light Company to annoyanoe. Tuesday night a boy and barefooted man, as shown by traoks left, untied the rope that held up the lamp at the oorner of Middle and Graves streets and let the lamp drop and break, and the same night some one out a pieoe off the rope from the lamp at the oorner of Broad and Met oalf streets and threw it over in Mr. George Henderson's yard, showing that the mischief was done in pure wanton ness. There is a tremendous crowd and the Atlantic Hotel is nearly as jammed as it was when Dr. Talmage was here. The Allianoe people are a fine-looking body, and we feel proud of the farmers as we do of the teachers who were re cently in session here. Today we will get fully down to business. D. T. C. Line of the N. W. & ('. Railroad. A. B. Morton, vice-president of the Cincinnati and Oape Fear Railroad, has reoorded in Berkley oounty, S. 0., a mortgage for $9,000,000 on the property of that road. The projeot ia said to be to run a road from Norfolk to Charles ton east of tbe Atlantio Coast Line, en tering Charleston on a bridge across the Cooper river, crossing Ashley river and going down to Savannah. The oompany now ooutrols a lino from Soutbport to Conway, S. C. From there the road ill be extended via Georgetown to Charleston. Tbe oompany has pur chased the franchise of the Mt. Grand Picnic-Thc Railroad-Exeur-sionists - Accident - Jacksonville Booming A Board of Health. Heavy rains end deep creeks. Our annual pionic at Alum Springs was quite a euocees. Sheriff Murrill employed the Wilmington brass band for the ocoasion, and they gave us all the muslo we had been locking for. The orowd was estimated to be 3,500. Our town Is still on a boom. New houses are going up, and the Onslow Lumber Company will put In larger maohinory in their mill machinery that will cut one hundred thousand foet per day. Jacksonville is developing fast, and ere many years roll by it will be one of the leading towns of Eastern North Carolina. The grading on tbe railroad is rapidly being pushed on towards New Berne. Our Coroner held an inquest over the body of Tom Williams today; a post mortem examination was made by Dr, E. L. Cox: he found ball lodged in back part of brain. The ball entered tbe head juat above tho eye and went en tirely through the brain. The boy lived three weeks after the scolded. Jacksonville is headquarters for ex cursions during the season. S.veral hundred colored excursionists wore out here last Monday, and when ready to return and while the train was in mo tion one of the intoxicated croup fell from the train and had one leg cut off just above the ankle, and the other orushed at the ankle. He was taken to Wilmington and amputation performed ; last news was that he was dead.
