Reciprocity iudoed. lie don't reciprooate worth a coat.' Maj, 0. M. Stedman tells the Asboville Citizen he will under no circumstances become a can didate for Governor. He wonld not accept if nominated. Stedman is a most excellent gentleman and a true Democrat. But, what is the mat tor with Sanderlin ! He is all right Trot him through. Just as we expected 1 The ad- vooates of a high protctive tariff are claiming that the advance in American wheat is caused by the McKinley tariff.- As well say that the orange blossoms of the South ia the result of Arctic snows. The laws of supply and demand govern now, as they always do. The press as a modern instru ment of warfare is not half appre ciated. Look at the press of Paris, now. France was uuable to keep the conquering Germans out of her capital in the war between those countries; but just see the licks she is getting in at Emperor William, the younger, through her press. Why, they have him half dead, and clean crazy, alread on paper. As far as Ool. Polk's friends are concerned, they are not willing for him to be a candidate for governor, as they do not propose that he shall step dowm from the pesidency . of the National Alliance. His best friends in North Carolina would rather see him in that place than in any political office. It appears ; very probable from what can be gathered that he will be re elected. The election will be held in Septem ber. Raleigh Correspondent Char latte Chronicle. . a Seeious state of political affairs exists in China, and the tombined fleets of the Powers may , be called upon at any moment to take - effective - action. Great 'excitement -v: prevails at the increasing tension between the ttuthoritities and the foreign minis ' ten. There is no reason to doubt that if the authorities do not yield, concerted it action by . the combined war vessels' Is imminent, It is know that the foreign minis ters have been compelled to inform the Chinese Government that joint naval demonstration, of an y effective nature,- In which' the Frence, American, ; British and German squadrons will take part, ill be ordered In the near future , unless speedy reparation is made for the injuries outrages and abases complained of by the ministers of the Powers. LOCAL NEWS. NEW ADVEBTI3EMS NT3. HowardGood things, etc Snallwood ft Slover Stoves, eto. Sixteen fire companies have up to date entered for the various events at the State tournament at Durham. Yesterday Mr. Thos. Howard moved a building down dose to his marine railways to be fitted up for his offloe. Today at 12 m. is the time for the sale of the houses on the lots destined for the sites of the United States publio building and the Episcopal rectory. A thirteen year old boy was placed in the penitentiary Wednesday to serve a seven years' sentenoe for highway robbery in , Orange oounty. He is the youngest oonviot ever sentenoed for that offence in North Carolina. At Raleigh the work of e tensive daoorations and paintings of the build ings, at the exposition grounds has begun preparatory to the great exposi tion, which will begin Ootober 1st. Well. known artists and deoorators have been employed to do the work Mr. C. J. Soheolky has a foroe of hands at woik doing tho grading for the switch whioh the A. and N, C. Railroad is to build to his planing mill, It will be a double switoh ono end going to the dry kiln and the other to the storage shed. It is rumored that W. Duke, of Dur ham, who donated almost the entire fund with whioh the new Trinity Col lege building was constructed there, has signified his intention to make another handsome donation to repiir the damage caused by the falling in of the tower. Among the minor improvements go ing on we notice that Mr. L. S. Wood is painting the front of his hardware store a light gray. It is pleasing to Bee buildings of any character kept nioely painted. In comparison with their cost nothing adds more to the attractiveness of their appearance. The large elegant orayon groupe por trait of all the eons of the late Judge C, R. Thomas, whioh is on exhibition at Mr. J. Snter's furniture store, attracts a great deal of attention, It was drawn by Mr. Naoe Brook, who is engaged at Mr. Ed. Gerock's. The figures are very natural and life-like; the work-is finely exeouted and refleots credit upon the talented artist. The premium list of the Thirty-first Annual North Carolina State Fair is a neat little book of 113 pages. The Fair will be held in Raleigh, October 13th, Hth. 15th and 16th, during and in con nection ith the Southern Inter-State Exposition. It is announced that the Fair and Exposition combined "will present an exhibition that has never been surpassed in the South in merit, variety and the arrangement of its several departments. Sam Idlet and Jacob Grimes, two oolored men from James City, informs us that some person or persons entered the field of Idlet Wednesday night and mashed up a large lot of water melons and out down a great quantity of his corn. Also during the night Grimes, a ferryman between James City and New Berne, had his boat stolen. They feel very muoh outraged at such treatment and attribute it to their having been witnesses for Bryan in the James City case. The N. C. State Fireman's Association will meet in Durham next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. All dele gates are expected to be on hand by 10 m. on the 25th inst. as that day will be for the transaction of Association business only. Eaoh company is en' titled to two delegates. The next two days will be tournament days and Secretary J. W. Griffith says all the companies that come must be in Dur ham by 10 o'clock on the morning of the 20th in order to take part in the parade. The New Berne Steam Fire Engine Company expects to be there Personal. Rev. T. M. N. George and family left yesterday morning to visit friends at Walnut Grove, N. C, and Mrs. George's sister, Mrs. W. B. MoGary and her mother, Mrs. M. H. Elmer, who have been visiting ber returned to their home ai Durham. Mr. 0. H. Guion left for Baltimore on professional business. Messrs. W.B. Boyd and W. F. Bonn tree returned last night from attending a meeting of the flnanoe oommittee of the American Legion of Honor, Mn. J. W. Mesic left to spend a short time at Morehead. Misses Charity Bell and Annie Aren- rdall left to visit relatives at Morehead Ber. It. G. Pearson In IU Health. Rev- R. G.. Pearson, the noted evange list who held a very successful series of meetings in New Berne a few years ago, has been advised by his physioians to stop work for a year on account of his health, whioh has not been good for nearly a year. Mr. Pearson, In a letter published in the Wilmington Messenger thus snnounoes how he will use the time: - "I, with my wife,- will on September 5th, sail frfcm New York for Europe and the; uoiy Land. 1 we win spend October in the Holy Land, will visit Greece, Egypt and Italy, will spend most of the winter in London and PariSi the spring in Germany and the summer in Switzerland and Sootland, returning after a years absence. My address will be Rev. B. G. Pearson, care of E. M. Jenkins, Queen's Court Hotel Palestine party, London) England." Ono of the Signs. One of the best signs that the people in this section are better off and more prosperous than tbey have been for a long time is indicated by the subscrip tion list of the Weekly Journal. Within the last few days three of our patrons have paid up to 1803, and yes terday a gentleman oame in that we had relied upon as responsible man and settled up for four and one half years' indebtedness. Does this sound like hard times? Surely not, and it is not. The indications are that the peo ple of this seotion are better off today than for years, and with a future more promising than ever known. The splendid crops of 1890 and the unparalleled truck season this year has worked untold benefits. Besides from direot results aocrued the tendency has bsen to inspire new hopes and establish greater confidence among monied men. On every hand out of as well as in the city, there is abundant evidenoe of prosperity, and it only remains now for every man to wake up, go to work, and speak encouragingly or shut up. High Praise for a Young Minister. Our townsman, Rev. Jas. Thomas, who has been in charge of the Presby terian church at Rooky Mount during the summer, exchanged pulpits with Rev. Mr. MoArn. of Wilson, last Sun day, and the Wilson Mirror says he preached two highly entertaining end very enjoyable sermons and made a most favorable impression upon all who heard him. His voioe "looks richness and volume, yet it is delightfully flex ible, and felioitously responsive to all the exacting requirements of the vary ing emotions of the heart, and thrills one with the fervid glowings of its dramatio passion. "In several instances his utterances approximated tho thrilling realm of a burning oratory, and oamo so near as to make us feel the electrifying outburst of its glowing fires. Hie manner of delivery is very engaging and fascinat ing, and interest in his discourse is never allowed to lag Jot a single minute. His language, while not rich with the alluring embellishments of rhetorical eleganoe and splendor, or resonant with the sonorous liow of rythmic graoe and poetic beauty, is clear ana pure ana chaste and smooth ana iiowb raaiantiy along with no grammatical impediments or impure sediments to break or soil the grace and purity of its pellucid ripples. tie is unquestionably a man or brains and talont andj culture, and in the two sermons he preachod on Sunday we saw the bursting buds of those fine flowers of ministerial effort, which will. when full blossomed and in richest bloom, distil a fragrance that will re dound to the glory of Ood, and to tho salvation of sinners." THE COLORED PAIR. Announcement to the Public. Among the Hills t!ood Land Exten sive Lumber Business Crop l'ros upects Revival in tho Church of Christ Pleasant People. Editob Journal; I am twenty-three miles east of Raleigh, on the R. and D. Railroad, in the beginning of the hill country. The soil, though quite rocky places, is adapted to a variety of crops, and some of the land yields two ba!ei of ootton to the acre. Corn is raised in an abundanoe on some of the lands. It has been said by some that there are as fine tobaooo lands in this community as there are in any other seotion of the btate. In a short distance of this place there is plenty of iron ore, over 60 per cent iron and some say greater than that. 8ilver and gold also, I think, have been found in a mile or so of the place, and with the proper amount of capital in vested, backed by the requisite degree of energy and publio spirit, this place could be made, indeed . a garden spot . There is only one firm here; they are engaged in the manufacture of lumber, farming and merchandising, and they are also contractors. They out everything right here in their shop, put it on the cars and send it to the plaoe it is to be put up, ready to put in place. They do business from the coast to the western part of the State. They out their own lumber, mold it with their n machines, and can, therefore, do work as reasonable as anybody, William Wilson. John Wilson, Charles Wilson, George Uzzoll are four of the firm. It is wonderful to see how smoothly they carry on their business, eaoh having his part to perform and on business goes like clock work. They are filling a bill now for a $11,000 set of stables; how will that do for a horse house V I have been told that the firm works over a hundred and fifty hands in their business. The prospect for the farmers in this immediate section is not so good as it was lost year. The superabundance of rain seems to have injured the oom and ootton somewhat, though crops are very fare. The meeting that began here the 6th inst. is going on yet with increased interest. To date there have been eleven confessions. The meoting will olose in a few days. Bro. J. J. Harper, the pastor of the ohuroh, is with me in the meeting and has rendered impor tant help. He has been preaching about eighteen yoars for the church at this place, and is loved by all. While he has been preaching for the ohuroh so long, he still xrows on the people, which is indubitable evidenoe that he ia not yet a grown man. He ought to be where ho could devote all his time to preaching that ought to be his en tire work. Our stay among this people has been indeed a pleasant one. Their kindness and broad hospitality will reach the heart of any man. I. L. CHKKTNUTT Wileon's Mills, Aug. 17, 1801.
