At Pantego, Sundhy afternoon, Mr.
U. L. Swindell's barn and stables
which were built together were struck
by lightaing and burned, together with
the contents of the barn. The loss was
some sevon or eight hundred dollars.
A horse in the stable was killed, but a
co!t in the same stable was not hurt.
Mr. C. K. Bell, formerly of Wild
wood, died at his home In Hobgood,
Ilnlifaz county, Monday, the 17 ih inat,
of malarial fever, aged 82 years. Hia

Dangerously Woccded.
Two colored men, Aarcn Lewis, from
Washington, and AIoczo Moore, from
South River, had a dispute at the foot of
Henoock street Tuesday night about 2
o'oloot and as Moore was starting away
Lewis ctmo after him and without
warning of his intention attacked and
out him dangerously about his body.
Lewis escaped at the time, but upon
a searoh beiug made on the steamer
Alpha which brought a party of ex-
oursionists over to attend the Fair be
was disoovered by policeman Land
stowed away in a seoluded part of the
hold and arrested.
Upon the statement of Dr. R. S.
Primrose, who attended the wounded
man, that it would be several days be
fore it could be determined how the
oase would terminate and that it might
nd fatally, 8. R. Street, Esq., post
poned the trial until September 1st,
(next Tuesday) at 8 p. m., and plaoed
Lewis' bail for appearance at that time
at $500. Bajng unable to give it he was
sent to jail. ..
Tobacco Raising a Success in Craven.
Messrs. E. H. & J. A. Meadows sent
a sample of tobacco raised by ' Messrs.
Haokburn & Willett at their celebrated
Oaks farm, Si mlfes from this olty, to
Hendersotj to get the opinion of the
tobacco growers of that section. They
are in reoelpt of a letter in reference to
it which states that all who have seen
it pronounoe it eqnal to the Nash oounty
grown tobacoo. To grasp the foroe of
this comparison it must be remembered
that no Btate exoels North Carolina in
raising the finer varieties of tobacco
and we are farther informed that
heretofore it has been an admitted faot
that Nash county raised tha best in the

The Colored Fair.
Though there was rain yesturday
morning, as it cleared off a good crowd
Keoembled at the Fair grounds, there

day's at'encunoe. A number of visitors
oatno in on excursions from Washing
ton, Elizabeth City and by the Atlantic
and N. C. Railroad from both ends of
the line. Other exhibits were also ad
ded to those alreedy at the Fair.
A baseball geme was played in the
afternoon between the Mutuals of Wil
mington and the Atlantica of New
Berne, the former coming out vic
torious. Liter in the afternoon horse raoing,
a foaturo which adds much Interest to
such occasions, took plaoe. There weie
both trotting and running raoes which
will be continued today.
As the rain prevented the Fair parade
on the btrcete yesterday it will take
place today at 0:30, a. m. There will
be a baseball game at the grounds at 11
a. m. between toe Island City of Green
ville and the Wineton Giants, and at 2
p. nt. tha wiunor of iho niornlrg game
will play iho Mutuals who won the
game yesterday aftornoon. The horse
racing will begin at 5 p. m., and thfcre
well bo speaking at night by Rev J. C.
