Thirty sailors have deserted United Stetes war ship Pensacola, at San Francisco, because the men do not want to go to Ohina on the vessel, declaring her not to be sea worthy. I HE learned men of science, hav ing now provided the United States with smokeless powder, will con fer a lasting favor by turning thtir colossal intellects to the evo lution of a smokeless cigarette. The Baltimore Son's letter from Washington says that all "of the leading Democrats in South Caro Una are pronounced Cleveland men, inolnding Senator Butler, Ex Sena tor Hampton, Congressmen Hemp hill, Elliott, and all of the other members of the Congressional delegation who retired at the close of the last Congress." Closing its review of industries and progress, the last Manufactur ers' Record says: "This list shows that, notwithstanding Summer heat and the troubles that have followed financial stringency in this country and abroad,' the South is pushing forward vigorously in establishing new enterprises to create wealth out of its abundant natual resources." One of the best, truest, noblest of North Carolinians if lying at the point of death, without any pros pect of recovery, at his home at Greensboro. Tens of thousands of North Carolinians who revere high oharactor and noble manhood will be profoundly regretful to know that Alfred M. Scales is very near the end of his mortal pilgrimage. May his last good day be his best day 1 Wil. Messenger, These will be a great freshet in the Reuse river below here. The low 'grounds in Johnston county are covered -and still the water rises. The people get from place to place with difficulty. The weather cleared at 12 o'clock today, though the morning was "very threatening Crabtree creek, a small stram three miles from here, is in some . places a miles in width and is over the tops of the luxuriant low ground corn. A committee has been appointed to invite Hon. Jerry Rusk, Seoretary of Agricul ture to visit the Fair and address the people. We learn from the Atlantic Seaside that Bev. John Evans, of Clyde, N.T., tias aooepted a oall to the Episcopal church of Beaufort and that he Is ex peoted to arrive there this week. The latest telegrams announced that the Congressional party in Chili is vic torious, that Balmoeada is defeated, that Valparaiso has surrendered and is in the bands of the insurgonts and that an early psaoe is looked for. The Greenville band was awarded the first prize of 850 for the best one outside the city attending the oolored Fair, The Mut ual baseball club of Wilmington, won the first prize 75, and the Stirrers of New Berne the seoond prize of $25 . We are pleased to learn that Rev. T. P. Rioaud, who has been ill with typhoid fever for three weeks at the residenoe of his daughter, Mrs. Bailie Farrior, in Kenanevillo. Is somewhat better and not In a dangerous oondiiicn though he is still quite sick and unable as yet to set up. The rainy spell of a few weeks ago aad scarcely dried off before another has set in. We ore informed that in some places the publio roads are al most impassible, and that crops are neoessarily being injured, the effect of which has already oaused cotton to go up a number of points. Tha cpeniDg of the Southern Inter State Exposition is only one month and two days off. It is now time for all non-perishable exhibits to be sent in as rapidly ai possibly. Mr. Win. Durn, chairman of the committee on Craven county exhibits, is anxious to get them at once. He has a man to see to their placing and will In a few days go up to Raleigh. Address your exhibits to him at New Berne and let them oome. Craven county ought to make an ex hibit that will do justice to this section. As will be remembered the last Legislature provided for the establish ment of an Agricultural and Meohani cal College for the oolored raoe. The trustees are now looking for a location and among the places endeavoring to get it are Raleigh, Winston and Greens boro. Would it not be well for New Berne to try and secure It ? We ought to have It and with the proper effort we believe it can be done. The attention of our business men is respectfully called to the matter and we would state that whatever steps are taken must be done right away. Watch Thief Captured. Yesterday afternoon Mayor Ellis found aid captured Henry Llollia, a colored mau charged with stealing a $125 gold Lwatch Monday night at Morehead from Mr. W. U. 3urhea, of Marion, 8. C it Is supposed by picking his pocket while on tho way from the train to the boat to cross over to Beaufort. It was found that Bollia had the watch by his offering to sell it at Morehsad before leaving there. A description of him and the watch was furnished the city authorities here and Friday they found that another colored man, Ellis Pearce, had the watch trying to sell it and with his aid Hollia was detected and secured. Pearce had been a waiter at the Atlantic Hotel but has been in New Berne for seven weeks. It appears that he undertook to sell the watch for Hollia on the strength of an acquaintance formed with him while down there. The trial will come oft to-morrow marning. The Railroad Wreck. Announcing the Surrender of the In surgent Forces Denials from Congressional Sources, Senor Lszcano, the Chilian minister at Washington, yesterday reoeived a oablegram dated Valparaiso, the 20th, from M. Fiual Test with Explosives Each One Brought Copious Showers. Bpeoial to Washington Poet. Midland, Tex., Aug. 27. Yesterday was the grand finale of the operations at this point of Uncle Jerry Rusk's sky stormers, and a fitting viotory was achieved by the scientists in their efforts to shake water from the burning winds of the Liano and Laredo, one of the dryest regions of Amerioa. For three weeks an Intermittent series of experimente has been carried out, and not in a single Instanoe has rain failed tdfcfall within ten or twelve boure after the explosions. Your cor respondent has been on the ground, and, therefore, is cognizant of all the facta. The series was brought to a olimax yesterday, when balloons containing several thousand fset of oxyhydrogen gas were sent up and exploded at heights varying from 1,000 to 10.000 feet, and at sundown batteries on the ground began their work, and until 10:80 p.m. a oonstant oannonade was oarried on under sky of perfect clearness, lit by oountlesa stars of a brilliancy seldom seen in the North. The barometer promised fair and the hygrometer stood between dry and very dry, The cowboys and ranchmen aald it would be utterly useless to hope for rain for a week under such conditions as existed, and all thing seemed com bined to withstand the tertiflo on slaught of the storms of the sky. At 11 p. m. Gen. Dyrenforth with draw his foroes and all retired for the night. Bleep, however, was soon in terrupted , for at 8 a. m. the first return fire flashed from the heavens, when the rain-makers were roused by a orashing peal of thunder, and the rain was toon beating on tho roof. At sunrise a magnifioent double rain bow arched the heavens, and the down fall of rain did not cease till S o'olook, a. m. A number of heavy charges of dynamite) wen then made, aad after every one the drops again poured down, till at last the clouds were entirely ex pended, and there was nothing left from which to shake the water. . Cattle men are jubilant over the suo oew of the experiments and scores of. Invitations are daily pouring in from various localities asking further opera tion in their vicinity. The next series of experiments will bo made at El Paso: Taenoa the party goes to Western Kinias. v ; , ., .t. Jewish Farmers for '. C. Mr. W. W. Bellamy, of this city, who secured his information direot from Mr. Long, one of the immediately interested parties.
