THE London Chronicle says that the Prince of Wales has all but decided to go to Chicago to attend the Exposition, and that he is likely to be accompanied by Em peror William of Germany. Official telegrams report that 1,500 persons perished in the des truction of Consuegra by the over flow of the Amaraguillo. Hundreds of others were injured by falling buildings, and enormous numbers of cattle perished. At other places many persons were drowned and much property was damaged. Hon. It. Q. Mills, of Texas, is now in Ohio to take part in the political campaign. His friends siy that he is one of the best stump orators in the country, and predict that the effect of his canvass will augment the Campbell vote very materially. It ia expeeted that Vance, Voorhees and Cr' isle will enter the campaign late' The President is noted for his devotion to his church. His organ, the Indianapolis Journal, referring to his speech at Rutland, Vermont, says that the dullest hearer could detect a belief in fore ordination and predestination as well as in the McKinley bill and sound currency. The New York Times thinks it would hare been more euphonious to say that "Harrison is a McKin ley Presbyterian." . . ' THE Forum improves , all the ' time under the editorial manage ment of Mr. Walter H.Page, a brilliant North Carolinian. It is broad, able and dignified. The last ; two numbers have been education- , at, and have contained trenchant papers from ' the ablest writers. The September 'number contains a symposium . upon "Present Pro blems of Education,' whioh makes it peculiarly valuable. ' We would like to see this'magazine the only great cosmopolitan magazine that a North Carolinian ever edited have a large circulation in North Carolina, It is instructive and in teresting, and improves every month. -State' Chronicle. While, and others are expected to make addrestes. The oom mittee invites every one interested, both white and colored, to attend and participate. The Virginian says that by a special act of Congress, flampton Road has been designated as the naval rendezvous of the word upon the occasion of the Co lumbian Exposition, whioh means that all the naval ships of the world will congregate at Norfolk preparatory to a gr-id naval review and parade. This will be one of the moat important his t jrioal events of the world, and prepar ations are being made oommensurate with its dignity. The case of the Atlantic Express Company, (of which Messrs. Watson, Daniels and Bell are the incorporators) vs. the W. & W. and R. & D. Railroads will be heard before the railroad com mission at Raleigh today. This express company, chartered by the late legisla ture, and composed of New Berne and Morehead gentlemen, is ready to com mence business as soon as the proper connections oan be made on railroads, but when application was made to the above mentioned roads they refused the privilege on the ground that they had already granted the Southern Express company exclusive rights, but the Atlantic Express company olalms that the roads being common carriers are bovni ts award equal rights to all. Jones who have been spending the summer in New Berne and Morehead returned to Dor ham to make arrangements for moving to Morehead, where Mr. Jones is going into the druggist business.
