The party "of twenty-two Penmyl

which the road is to traverse, arrived
here last evening and intend to con

road and came down with them them
last night. Others met them at the

In connection with this visit we
would call attention to the other, the
New Berne, Wilmington and ObbIow
Railroad, which is now being built. It
will be when completed 85 rf iles in
length, which ia about as short a dis

49 miles of this road are now completed
and 10 miles additional aro graded- -a
total of 59 miles which is only 26 miles
away from this city, and a portion
of the road paneos through as fine land
as there is in Eastern North Oarolina,
the truoklng qualities of whioh are
probably not surpassed by any in the
South. We look for thoao two roads to
further open up these lands and give a
great forward impetus to this city and
the surrounding country.
We welcome these gentlemen to our
city and hope their visit here may be a
pleasant one and also that it may result

TWO SINGERS.
Who Distinguished Themselves at the
Raleigh Festival.
Prof W. H Neave, a musioian of
muoh more than State reputation,
writes the Charlotte Chroniole referring
to the Musical Festival recently held at
Baleigh in whioh a fitting tribute is
paid New Berne's sweet singer , Miss
Marian Radcliff;
"Your Raleigh correspondent ia your
issue of the 4th., says: "The vocal
honors of the entire festival were borne
off by Miss Nellie W Mid-ill, of Smith-
neid, whose voice t of surprising
olearness, delicacy and scope," eta.
By a single pen wave ho thus essays to
"sweep out" all tho male, an wull as
female soloists, Ktii par; singers, as well
as tne chorus. Uncorrected this bold,
but thoughtless assertion besides being
inappreolatively ungenerous, is fraught
with danger to the future of festivals
purely North Carol ioian.
Iam therefore imoelled to call
thougtful people's attention to the fact
that musioal renditions may be compar
ed with dining table viands, in eaoh
case all may be defeotably good but in
no degree comparable ; the soups can
not be compared to the fiah, the fish to
the meats, the vegetables tothe pastries,
etc.. and yet each be superlative deli
sious in itself.
But I must bridle mv earrulitv and
briefly say that, with two or three
exceptions all the soloists and part
ongera did so well as to merit individu
al eulogy, but I will briefly present the
salient paints of two Miss Waddell
and Misa Radcliff aa illustrative of the
folly and danger of comparisons for
the most sublimated of human beings
oannot afford to have their finer feelings
wantonly wounded. Miss Waddell
possesses very superior capabilities,
both vooal and histrionic Hhe is a
liatht dramatic singer overflowing with
charming vivacity, and this appears lo
be natural as her coloratura ia deliver
ed in exquisite purity and evennera and
witnout the eliehtesc enon. iier
pearly trills run and in general, are
perfeot almost.
Now Miss Radoliff, of Newbern, Is
eqally as admirable, but is a wholly
different type of superior vocalism She
appeals to the deeper feelings of oultur
ed humanity producing a serene enjoy
ment that is unspeakably refining to all
listeners. Her rendition of the "An
gels Serenade" gave unequivconl
manifestation of her grand pow-r id
this humanizing influence.
Some characteristics of her tinging
are pure emission, a direct attack of
every tone, correct phrasing eciooth
vocalizition and a total freedom from
tremulo. She had neither mannerisms
nor aff eotations and sanic with a natural
ness of feeling and emotion that needed
only to be a very little more intensified.
If she chooos she is,, equil to the
utmost requirement of the highest
roles in oratoiio."
