Its purpose is to erect a monument to ex-President Davis. A bronze statue commemora tive of tbe public services of Gem William Garter Wiokham was nn . veiled in the city of Richmond on the 29te inst., in the presence of an Immense multitude. Three attempts were made Within twenty four hours to destroy the town of Newman, Oa. Many bales of cotton were burned; Militia was placed , on the streets. It is evidently theWk of Incendeariee. Prominent women of Danville, V., .have visited thesalooons in that city and requested the keep era to close their doors during the religions services being conducted by Evangelist Fife. JUST so long as Pat Egan is permitted to represent this Govern ment in Chili there will be a c8u belli, and the United States as the offender. This is precisely the position we should not be in. N. T. Advertiser. FoBESTjSflres in tbe southern part of Indiana have assumed most - alarming dimensions. Over two square miles have already been burned over, M& .the fire ia now ' within half a mile of New Albany, with several bouses on that city's hill side now burning. s Thb registration is very heavy - in the State of New York. The .. Advertises says: "A large vote is ;. eertain to he polled, but it does no follow that any candidate ia going to be elected by a large majority. Indeed the candidate who has cuticle on nia teeth may owe much to that fact." Thb national encampment at the Chioago World's Fair1 will be a atrlotly militia affair, only Regular Arm; officers and members of the National Gnarda participating. The veterans are not in it. Aplenty of responses have come from water-wet ks and electrlo street railway oompanlea in answer to the advertise ment for bids to put them la New Feme, and a number of representatives of companies are expected to arrive here this week on the business of sc ouring : the franchise. Keeler, keeper of North' west Point lighthouse tells ns that In the reoent atorm, countless myriads of email birds, the largest number of them that he ever saw, attracted by the light, congregated around the light house throughout the entire night and that the next morning he ploksd Bp 79 that had been killed by dashing against Ii, If he bad been disposed to hae, oaught them he believes he could hare secured a barrel of them. At the Southwest Point light house there was a similar phenomenon. . The Elusion Free Press say s that Mr, R. W. Alexander of Lenoir oounty has raised a etalk of ootton with 1(7 matured bolls on it. We hope he has kept it Intaot and that he will have It on exhibition ar the New Berne Fair Let every body remember that though this Fair Is held in New Berne and called by that name for ooyvenlenoe Its not by any means for New Berne ex clusively. It is la reality as its name properly designates, the East Carolina Fish, Oyster, Game and . Industrial Association and every eounty in East Carolina should feel equal right In it and equal pride In mating It auemaful aril in displaying their prcilu..j ft it s 1 pn'r3 tue benffl'.s fro- s HTJBRAH FOB THE FAIB. The Date Fixed-Extra Efforts-Premiums Largely Increased Spread the News and Everybody Work. The managers of the East Carolina Fish, Oyster, Game and Industrial Association have held their meeting and deoided on the time of holding its Fifth Exhibition. It will be held as before, an entire week and will begin Monday, Feby. 22 and close Saturday Feby. 27. "Ever Onward" has been the prao tioe of the Now Berne Fair from the flrit exhibition ever held and "onward still" is the motto now. The premium list at our last Fair was the largest ever offered in the State but, notwithstand ing the fact, the c (floors decided to increase it 85 per cent, for the coming Fair and the racing premiums were likewise the largest ever offered in the State and they have been greatly in oreased far the next Fair and though the fireworks at our last Fair were eplendid the amount to be expended on them at the coming Fair has been in creased over the amount formerly ex pended 800 per oent ! Our Fair by its excellence has gained the'reputation of being the best in the State but we are not satisfied without still further progress and to accomplish will require united and strong effort from all. Let everyone that made an exhibi; at the last Fair strive if possible t make a still better one this time aid let everyone who has not yet helped out in the great work come forward tbUyear. Do not think beoause you can only make a small exhibit that it will not be appreciated. It is the many littles that oause suooess. Let no one stand baok from sloth, indifference, lack of appreciation of own abilities or any thing else but do what yon can and we will still farther astonish the many visitors who may be expected in still greater throngs next year than ever before. And Still the Sport Increases. Mr. W. L. Kennedy of Lenoir county and Mr. W. S. Herbert, editor of the Kinston Free Press, who have been spending a short time at Morehead re turned home yesterday morning. Mr. Herbert and Mr. Kennedy went fishing the previous day and caught 850 fine fish, principally trout, bluo-flah and drams. Judge Boykin, who has been holding court at Beaufort, tried his hand one day and oaught several hun dred. He had three flah boxes full. Three Morehead youths went out and in three hours oaught fish enough to bring them in over $7 eaoh. What they oaught weighed 1,100 pounds. These are all oaught with hook and line eaoh line has several hooks attached and the fish bite so fast that it often happens that two or three are caught at one t me. We do not believe it would.be a ay exaggeration to say that for suoh fishing Morehead cannot be exoelled in the world. We were told a short time ago of one shipment of fresh fish being made from Morehead that weighed over 80 tons but we are informed that Friday's supply of fish exoeeded that shipment about 50 per oent. A single days catch is enough to sell for several thousand dollars in the markets to whioh they are ahipped. Every available boat around More- head that is at all suitable is pressed into servioe and all who go out are abnndantly rewarded In both pleasure and profit. The Atlantic Express Company Wins I Intheoase of the Atlantio Express Company vs. the B. ft D. and W. ft W, Ballroads, the Railroad Commission has deoided in favor of the Atlantio Ex press Company that is, that it shall have equal privileges with the Southern Express Company over those roads. The company aeserves ana will no donbt aohleve success. It Is a North Carolina Company, with the general ofHoe in New Berne. Several of Its stockholders reside in New Berne and Morehead City. Some of them reside Abroad. The ones composing it are sound, enterprising butiaass men, who by their past suooeesful business careers hays done muoh to develop this section, They are also large exporters. One firm (Messrs. Watson, Daniels ft Bell) that is represented ia the company pay out about $30,000 per year la sxpreas charges. ;ri::f'iS''' The railroad commission has t erred some Important benefits on the public It has established lower rail road fares and lower telegraph rates, and now it seems that it will not permit any carrying company to have a mo nopoly when Competitors wish to enter the field. We have, previous to this. omen attention to ' high ; express ohirges and given the opinion that the oompanlea owe lower rates to the pub lic, and we believe that if they were lowered to reasonable figures the pa ronage would be eo increased that the profits to tbe , companies would be as great as before. We hope lower rates will result. A Kegro Lynched by Segroes. CovwaTON,La, Oot. 29.
