Sage affair, is believed to have been Henry L. Korcross of Sommer ville, Mass. THERE are again rumors of war. A battle has been fought between British regiment and an Asiatic tribe, and the question of the hoar is, "Is it war with Bassia 1" Dimes are la great demand at the Treasury Department. Treas urer Nebeckor has ordered 9130,000 of- ten cent pieces from the San Francisco mint in order to meet the demand. IN the Senate, Senator Hoar will be at the head of tbe Judiciary Committee in place of Ex-Senator Edmonds. Mr. Tiller succeeds Mr. Hoar as chairman of the committee on Privileges and Elections. Speaker Cbisp has announced the committies on accounts and mileage. Busk, of Maryland is chairman of the committee on ! ! accounts and Castle, of Minnesota, r is chairman mileage.. of the committee on ; Even Boston women do not care to vote. , Though permitted to vote in school elections they do not care to exercise the privilege. In 1888 nearly 20.000 women voted. In 1890 only 7;000 voted. - Because an Ohio minister .8 1 smokes his congregation has voted to reduce his salary. . The chances r r are that the minister will not worry , much if some of the members ot his congregation smoke in the future - : Much cotton is imported into this country from Pern, East Indies - and - China. A remarkable midget child is attracting attention at Charleston West Va. The child was born to Mr. . and Mrs. Eagene Perk ins mooth , sgj and how weighs only two and a quarter pounds. Cowles will be given the chairmanship ot a committee while Ool. Henderson and Mr. Bonn will also have good positions tendered them by Speaker Crisp. The other North Caroli nians are all new members, bat Mr Crawford has already been as signed to a committee, and onr delegation will fare as well as the great number of Democratic mem bers will permit. Representative Culberson, of Texas, has accepted the position of Interstate Commissioner. His name will be sent to the Senate on Monday and he will resign from the House at once. We regret this. Cnlberson is one of the ablest men n the House. If Mills goes to the Senate and Culberson to the Inter state Commission tbe Texas delegation now one of tbe strongest will become one of tbe weakest in the House. Down in the United States Treasury vaults, as a matter of courtesy and of great interest (o visitors, those having cards from Mr. Nebeker's office are frequently handed a small package of bonds to hold a few seconds in their hands, while the custodian an nounces to them that tbe package contains a million and a half dol lars in bonds, held as security for tbe circulation for some certain national bank. Bearing 4 per cent. interest, at tbe rate of 3G5 dnys in calendar year, tbe package of bonds earns a trifle over 11 cents a minute. Think of itl LOCAL NEWS. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. A portion of the cargo taken out by the steamer Newberne of tbe O. D. line yesterday was quite a number of large boxes of select bamboo, ivy, and other ohoice evergreen for Northern eitiea for Christmas deoorations. How is that proposition from the Philadelphia cotton fao.orj? One of our go-ahead citizens is willing to take hold of the matter in a business-like form by off sring free site that is lm mediately on deep water and near tbe railroad. The Goldaboro and Whitehall Steam boitcompany'a steamer Sadie M. Kind, Capt Wm. T. Roberts, whioh was re cently built in Qoldsboro by O. E. Band & Co., came down to New Berne yesterday for the first time and will go on Howard's ways for repairs before leaving. Our merohanta are having their stores tsatily arranged and displayed with splendid stooks of good for the holiday trade. The adjoining counties will find it to their advantage to visit New Berne, for tbey can find most anything and at a low prios as any cltynnder 85,000 population. Capt. Soutbgate, ot the steamer New berne, reports the continued enormous oatoh of magnificent tea bluefish ia the vloinity of Rosnoka. The run exceed the oapaoity to handle. You declined and returned it tome, with the crushing reply that I was no poet, and you cculd turn out better poetry out of a sausage machine. And witb a reed I wrote upon the sand these words: "Agnes, I Love Thee!" But the winds came and tbe waves rolled mountains high And blotted out the fair impression. Cruel wavesl treacherous sande. fragile reedl No longer will I truit to thee; But from the highest mountain s peak I'll pluok the tallest pine, And dipped in tbe orater of Vesuvius, With it I will write Upon the high and burnished heavens these tender words: The Bargain Store has the biggest stock of neckwear ever seen in tbis city, And are now offering such exquisite silk scarfs at 25j. eaob, that their very cheapness would almost take your breath away, And I would like to see any doe on wave wash that out.
