Somewhere we have read of an Irishman who said: "We have no need of tbe snn; it is light enough in the day time. The rcoon i all tight; it shines at night." The r moralist says: "We have no need 'of Christianity. By so doing he tempts him, and thus do the devil's work. A little girl disobeys her mother, and then asks her sister not to tell their mother. This little girl helps the devil by tempting her sister to tell a lie. Yes, every boy or girl is doing the devil's work who tries to make anyone do hat that person knows to be wrong. Messenger speaking of the advantage of manufac turing ootton in close proximity to the ootton fields, says: In the years agone we had frequent oooasions to set forth the advantages of the South as a ootton manufacturing eotion over New England. Five or six years ago this superiority was flatly denied by New England economists, manufacturers and editors. Some of them have learned better by this time. The wisdom of bringing the mills to the ootton is understood now by some. The Southern mills for the last ten years have clone better upon an average than the Hew England mills have done. There is a difference in the oost of oot ton to Hew England and Southern mills sufficiently great to give the latter the advantage, without considering obeaper labor and cheaper living. A correspondent of the Boston Wool and Cotton Beportsr presentf some figures that will give the readers of that pub lication some needed information. Raw materialise moat important faotor in the make up of profits or loss. A Pies ident of a leading Southern mill shows that it coats $48 58 to put at the mill a bale.weigbing 490 pounds, at 10 cents a pound. The reselling of bagging and ties (SI) is deducted, making the ooet as above. To deliver this bale in New York coets $56,55. Tbe bale will make 416 yards of cloth at a oost of 18i cents per pound in Boston andllioents per pound in the South. This gives a dif ference of li oents per pound, or over I a bale, in favor of the South. New England has some advantage in labor, experience, eto. cut tbese are being steadily overoome in the South with time, while the difference iu cost of raw material will remain for all time. a Coming and Going. ' There was an appalling calamity at Krebs, four and a half miles east of McAllister, Indian Territory, Thursday evening at five o'olook. A terrible ex plosion occurred in a mine in which were 860 men, most of whom were waiting for the cage to take them out, and the foot of tne ehaft is one mass of dead bodies. Eighty-five men oame out by an old entry, and forty-two have been saved by the shaft, most of whom are more or less burned and bruised and half will probably die. This leaves about 230 men yet in the mine, and in all probability over 200 of them are dead. They are so badly mutilated that nearly every body recovered is past recognition. The explosion was caused by firing a shot when gas was in the mine. Claims Allowed. The following are the claims allowed by the county commissioners at tneir meeting on Jan'y 5th: Robt.
