Ooe is to prevent trusts, " the enemies' of the people, the other to tax Incomes. That trusts should be sqelohed is too plain to be argued. Potgic ene mies should be put in limbo. As to taxing incomes, why not 1 North Carolina does now, and has through the . years, taxed incomes over tl,000. Why should not the rich pay on their excess 1 It any man has an income of $5,000 and is un willing to pay a tax on it, if he will hand it over to us we will very gladly pay a handsome tax for its use. Wilmington Messenger. The Russian relief movement has been relieved of another em barrassment. Arrangements have been made in New York to ware honse all shipments of grain that may be forwarded to that city from the West. The corn and wheat are the gift of a generons and sym pathizing people, the transportation by rail to the seaboard is furnished by the liberelity of the railroad eomjjanies, and now all oonsign menu are to be stored on arrival free of cost. The next thing will ne to provide for the shipment of these contributions by sea to Rus sia, and this problem will doubtless be satisfactorily solved at Thurs day 'a meeting of the New York Chamber of Commerce, whieh ha been, specially called to consider the whole question. COWARD. DETECTIVE HANEY'S WORK. How the Train. Wrecking Crime Was Fattened to the Guilty Man. Toe Atlanta Constitution ttlis the panicnlara of tbe detective work by whioh the Bottian Bridge train wrecker was discovered aa follows: Besidee making the arrest, tbe Atlan ta detective for that's what he is ha' secured a full, free and complete confession. The prisoner's name is John Botd and the deteotive who traile i bim to his hiding place and then jailed bim u Tom Baney, onoe the well-known and successful marshal, chief of police and detective of Gainesville, Ga. Immediately after the terrible wreck occurred, the Richmond & D.nville road offered a reward of (10,000 for the arreat of the wreckers The best detectives in the oountry were oaught bv the munificent offer made, and is a day or two that seotion of North Carolina was overrun with professionals and amateurs, all eager to grab the purae. Every pointer became a mystery when an attempt was made to follow it But Paney. who was then, as be is now, doing tbe seoret work for tbe Richmond & Danville, was upon the ground. Be. like others, was mystified, but. unlike others, he kept working hard on the oase. HANEY S GOOD FORTUNF. Seven weeks ago, Detective HineyV irood fortuue that's what it may be oalled threw him in oompany with a oegro team band on tbe Richmond & Danville, who gave bim a starter 00 tbe story again. At fitst Baney smiled ai the team hand's etoty, but decided, nevertheless, to investigate it. Almost at the first step bo was asloniebtd al me diaooveties. and then, dropping everything else, went down to haid work Witbin a few days Haney he oame oonvincd that he was on tbe riiiht traek, but realized that he bad a difficult piece of work before him. Point aftor point was taken up by Baney, until he locattd the man upon whom his suspicion had been directed. A TELL TALE FACSAQE. - Two weeks ago Haney ascertained that a man in Statesville had in be possession a package which Boyd had left with bim Two days later the detective knew the contents of tbat package. Sixteen hundred dollars in billp. Several watches and oihei j welry, Tha't what Haney found it to be. Then the custodian of the package was taken into the secret and Bod, with whom he held frtquent coovers tiona, was more closely watched thai ever by Baney and more aseiduousi) courted by bis 'banker " Boyd, it ap pears, bad every o nfldence in tbe mc who held the stuff, and one night, when olosely quextioned, told bow ha ome to have it Tbat story was a full confession ot the wieoking work by which so man lives were Jot. In bis oot.fe-Bion Boyd described the tools be had u-ed, and toid just what be bad rioue with tbem. There was a crowbnr, a mSnkey wrench nnd apikiifter E.oh "ne Boyd hd hidden securely but in bis conversation with the St.tex ville friend he dtBoriied their exact bid ng2 place. THE 1MPLHM8NT3 FOTOD. Baney made a eearcb for tbe imple ments. Tbe crowbar ba found jusi where Boyd said he bad .ecret'd it ano w a just tbe implement in every detail B iyd bad described. Then a half mil. atthepoint Boyd indicated, the spike, li'ter was rescued from a clump ol bu-hes. The monkey wrrnch Boyd said he ha" thrown in tbe nreek just above tbe b idge Ao ffort or two was made to find it, but without suco-ss, Th-' Boding f ibe btr and apiketiftrt just where Boyd said he left tbem. and ibe possession or tbe money and jewel ry, convinced Baney that he had found the right man But, to add to his certainty, Baney induoed tbe statesvllle man to arrange for another meeting with Boyd. Thai me ting had two or three witnesses and before it was over Boyd related his Story. Be described minutely bow he nad secured the tools and how he bad pulled the spikes, moved tbe rails ann ditched tbe train.' EVERY DETAIL IN TQE STORY. Was given with an evident piide in the work as Boyd related it. But as he finished the reoital Baney worked in and made bis pull. Then the stuff was surreniered to the detec tive and in it was a watch which baa been lost by a man killed in the wreok. and was easily identified. At first Boyd made a vigorous kiok, but finally gave in and to Baney and those with him repeated the story, and he was taken tsaCbarlotte and jailed. Bovd. in bis story, tells tbat he suc ceeded in robbing the people while helping to moqe them from the wreak. Be gives the names of the party he ays assisted him. LATER.
