There is a desire expressed to effect the organization of a North Carolina Poultry Association during the ap proaching exhibition of the New Bern Fair. Many State have them and with the attention that is being attracted towards this industry there la good ground to bop that the organization oould b made uaeful and promotive of the growing of the finer varieties of poultry in their highest development in all parta of the Stat. THE NEW CATTLE RAISING COUNTRY. "North Carolina Offers Better Oppor tunities than any Other State in the UnioB." Stock in the Eastern Section. From the Southern Progress, a new Industrial paper of Norfolk, we take the following a-ticle: Ic is doubtful if there is any other aectton of Amxiioa. that oom pares witb toe Norfolk & Southern section of North Carolina, for raising cattle. Tyrrell oounty is especially adapted to atook raiaing, and at preeut, this busineas i more largely oonduoted than in any other aeetion east of the Mississippi river. The oattle are allowed to run wild in tbe swamps, feed on rich growth of reeds, which are always (reah and green. No attention what ever ia paid them, but to mark the young atock and to "round-up" tbe animala when wanted. Tbere ia no original system of stook rai ing in North arolioa at preaent, tnoutb it ffers better oppporiunitirs than any other State in tbe Union. Ex tensive bodiea of land can be entered at trifling coat, and converted into better stock ranches than ejiaf any where else in the world Under ioteiu cent management, like that of Theodore Roosevelt or Waddinsham, North Carolina would lival. if not surpass, Mexico, Texaa and the Dakotaa. To sum up tbe entire list of a ivan tages which North Carolina presents would take too much apace and South ern Progress has but little to apare but North Oarolina or raibr the Nor folk & Southern aeetion of it. off- r solution to the problem of successful oattle raising which no other State can offer. To commence with, the Norfolk & Southern seotion not only preaenta plains covered with rioh grasaea. bnt its forests are filled with reeds, wbioh are tbe great food and fattening staple, and which contain the same nutritient pro perties, or food elements, aa olover or oorn stalks. Cotton seed meal supplies any lacking fat-produoinit elements, if any exists. Then, too, winter pastures do not have to be provided, with bruah or hills to break the northers, for tboae winds have no exiatenoe in North Carolina. In regard to markets, Norfolk always crenenta one; and if the ranchman wiahea to ship to Liverpool, he can load bia cattle on Norfolk & Southern cars, and within four houra have them on the decka of the Liverpool steamship at Norfolk. This fact, moat oertainly ia an advantage wbioh tbe Western or South weatern Statea oannot offer, for with them it takes a week to deliver atock to any steamship line, and then the cattle are in a miserable condition Tbere is too muoh of a tendency in people to undervalue the advantages and capabilities of their surroundings until by some means they are brought so plainly to their notice that they can not longer keep from realizing them. Stook raising ia no exception to the rule. Too many people when speaking of the subject seeemingly look through a magnifying glass at the prairie and blue glass regions and fail to properly appreciate tbe different, but ncne the leas important favorable features of their own locality. The above article ahows wha is thought in an adjoining State of our stock raising prospects. Tbe Stats is waking up on stook raising and improved animals and beat methods are to a great extent displac ing common breeds and ordinary methods. Horse and mule raiaing ha beoo ne an established industry m the Weatern part of the State, and one of our New Berne dealers, Mr. E S. Street gets bis entire supply there. While as yet, comparatively little attention is given in Eastern Carolina to this braooh of the business it by no means follows that it could not be made a large and profitable industry if taken bold of an developed with the same confidence and enthusiasm ahown along other lines and if ahy one desires to get a better idea of what we are doing at oattle raising let him exsmine well the specimens shown at tbe New Bern Fair and if any visitors desire to in speot a model stock farm fitted up with the latest and beat applianoes for easily appliances for easily attending to and making oomfortable tbe hundred of bright, healthy, beautiful grade and fall-blood animals with which it is stocked. Messrs. Hack burn & Willett'a admirably managed stook farm 21 miles beyond tbe city will afford tb wiahsd-for opportunity and these gen tlemen cordially invite all visitors to th Fair to drive out and inspect their farm, their stook, their building and their arrangement!. Unquestionably North Carolina can beoome not only a large prod uoer but an exporter of live stock, and for breed ers to meet and oompar result is on way for th advanosment of the indus try to b promoted. A Good TVaj to Help a Town. ; On of tha best and sorest way for any town oroity to impulse new life and bnild np its interests is for it citi zens tokav what is by soma termed genuine grit. There most be som push, vim eoopled with good judgement.
