Remarkable Relics and a New Berne Inventor. We called upon Col. J. D. Whitford t) ascertain if he bad gathered any news in his recent visit North and es pecially to Washington City that would be of interest to the public Wo re minded him that he had promised to write us but he had not fulfilled it. He said: "Yes, I made the promise and intended to comply with it, but oircumstances beyond my oontrol pre vented my doing bo. However, I can now give some facts in which our peo ple may feel an interest. "On my arrival home, I found some correspondence which unfortunately reached New Berne during my absence or it would have received prompt at tention. First we have a letter from Col. T. B. Eeogh, Commissioner of the World's Fair as follows: Foti'y 14, 1892. Col. Jno. D. Whit ford, My dear sii: It has occurred to me sinoe I oame here that I can tet some of the World's Fair officials to go to Newborn, and I wieh you would talk ii over with the offloeia of jour Fair. I can get Cot. McKeczio of Ky., Vice Prea't of the Nat. World's Fair C om mission, maybe President Palmer, and other equally prominent people. I have talked with McKeczie about it, but not with others, because I don't know what your people would do about it. The gentlemen I have in mind will all be in Washington next Friday, and if your Fair management desire anything like this, if they will leaye a communica tion at the Ebbitt for mo that day I will put myself to the work at once. Yours truly, Thomas B. Kecqfi. 'Next, Col. Eeogh to Col. A. B. Andrews, also commissioner of the World's Fair, touching the matter: Chicago, Feb'y 14, 1892. Dear Colonel: I ani trying to arrange for a little party to go from Washington to the New Berne Fair. I bave written Col. Whitford to see the officials there and ascertain their idea of having some of the World's Fair cffioials go there. President Palmer, St. Clair, Massey and Lorman, will be in Washington next Prirtxv also col. Mcrlenzie. If the Nw Bi-rn pnoole will take the matter up and communicate with me next Km I think I (-HQ give them an ad vertisement that win do the State some good. -ye oould take the party to Raleigh from New Berne. Yours truly, Thos. B. Keogh. Below is a letter from Col. Andrews on the same subject: KaleiBh, February 17. 1393. Col. John D. Wbitfokd, New Berne, N. O. Dear Sir; Inclosed I send you a cony ot letter I have just received from Col. Keogh, one of the World 's Fair Com missioners. It explains itself. I think it would be a good advertisement to have the World 's Fair Commissioners at New Berne, but of couree this is a matter for you all to determine. I will thank you to show this letter to Presi dent Ohadwick. Yours Truly, A. B. Andrews. 'Col. Andrews and Col. Keogh oom- pose the oommittee appointed to solioit articles from North Carolina for ex hibition at th World's Fair and they are taking oommendable interest, as will be seen, in the matter. Th former was in attendance at the New Bern Fair and was delighted with its success. These gentlemen, in due time, will be beard from again as they design with the aia or those directly interested to prove to the world , the value of our neb Industry. Now we oan state that Senator Ransom, of North Carolina with a party of Senators, among whom will be the President pro tern of the Senate, Mr. Maoderson, design visiting in April the North-eastern fisheries of the State as well as those at New Berne, (taking in our truok farms) and those of Morehead and Beaufort. These in dustries are exoiting muoh greater interest abroad than our people oon template. Tr.e immense catch of fiah on Albemarle sound and its tributaries and in the waters about New Berne and Beaufort harbor, of which the Journal is oonstantiy giving what seems to those not acquainted with the industry, to be fabulous accounts and the curiosity to witness such fishing even in Washing ton Oity inoreases daily. Thus we may expeot these distinguished visitors with oertainty at the time mentioned. "While on this subject I would men tion the faot that the virtue of the water in Seven Springs in Wayne oonnty is reaohioR out in tbe country, and ' even in Washington Oity it is ac knowledged. President Chadwick, cf th A. & N. C. R. R. has an order from Senator Ransom for some of this water that he might show to his colleagues to prove his faith by bis works. This request of Senator Ransom for the water will be immediately oomplied with. But few people who have not visited the spring oan have any idea oftheir beautiful location. It resembles more the country in the mountains than on the Neuse. . "I found also the truokinff interest of New Berne far reaohing. I met a dis tinguished gentleman . from - Detroit who, when h became acquainted with th plao I was from. New Berne, said the name was familiar to him from the sale of its truck In his city. We pre lum of course, that there were second band shipment msd perhaps from cities on the Atlantio ooaat. "It ia now known to the North Caro lina Commissioners of- tbe World' Fair that th bit of iron found by Robt. 8. Moore, or Hew Brn some years ago in the post to whioh Columbus -was chain ed in the dungeon on the lle of St. Domingo. are now . where they can be obtainad, with the history of th man ner in whioh they were discovered, Mr. moor was an omoer in tbe united States navy at the time and h was aided in- his work by th Governor of St. Domingo. They will hav them DKibabiT exhibited at th World' Fair. giving credit for the preservation of thi scored relio or the great discoverer of h Nw World to whom credit is du. h vu -;':-:; - .'v ..... "There will also, we think, be suc cessfully shown there that John Gill, o New Berne, was the original inventor of what is known as "Colt s Revolver. Gill was robbed cf this invention bv Colt, of Connecticut, who happened to meet bim in Washington. He owned the original gun cf Gill's make in 1829 and loet it on tua fall of New Berne during the war. "Gill also vulcanized india rubber and laid s'ate with it on the old jail in New Berne, before Goodyear dreamed of it. Ue was an Edisou, but notwith standing, one of his sons, who is now chief of one of the departments in the patent office in Washington city was compelled to borrow $25. as he himself tells, from a citizen who is still living in our midst to enable bim to gel to Bilti more wb9n he left to seek his forture elsewhere ''Columbus lost the title of the conti nent whioh be had discovered, still be Is not deprived of theoredit. It will be likewise with Uill, provided the ffforts of the commissioners can prevail.'' A DOOMED YACHT. Xews iu a Uottle From a Fated Vessel, Three Men Lost at Sea, Siipposalily Near Xag's Head.
