Bogers, the teacher of the Literary Department of Kinsey Semi nary, ha a very sensible and praotical arWole in th last nnmber of Th School Girl on "Language Drills." Al though designed primarily for the ohool room, some of the ideas ad vanced are worthy of eomideration by any one interested In youth. It would seem that any soholar who has the advantage Of suoh drills aa are recommended would be reasonable sure of obtaining a better flow of words and of gaining n ability to think quick ly and to express his or her ideas more easily, explioity snj oonneotedly, wbioh accomplishment would give the power to present a line of thought at any time in tbe best manner so that it would be readily grasped by the hearer or reader and impressed upon them. To acquire suoh an art Is of great value and training alorg this line ought to receive considerable atten'im in every school. Miss Bogers says: Developing language, is giving addi tional power. "Language is tbat fsoulty of tbe mind by whose activity ideas and thoughts are associated with their eetabliahed signs." Words without ideas do not constitu e knowledge. The idea should reoeive primary importance, and the new word or phrase should be taught as a second ary matter, But it should be none tbe lees thoroughly t m?bt, and the pupil should be required to use it. To cultivate language the following plan may be carried out with good results: 1. Introduce an object which will interest the olass, and let them talk freely about it. We learn good Eot- liah, as we learn baa, by imitation Liter, let them talk with their penoils about the object and read what they have said. 8. Give the ohildren opportunitiea to decoribe things or plaoes they have seen, to relate stories, and to repeat items of intell2CEce in their own Ian-. gnage. a. isnoourage eaon pupil to use to express his own ideas, the new words learned from books or from tbe conver sation of others. 4. Aid eaoh pupil to suggest, or to learn more than one way to say the same thing. 0. impress the idea that I know. but I can't "tell" doesn't know well enough. By skillfully questioning younger pupils, and by topioal form of recitation from older ones, require eaoh member of the olass to give in conoise language, tbe substance of every les son learned. With the above drill a child wi.l soon have a good vooabulary of words and will be. able ts use them freely and naturally. Composition day will not inspire tbe terror that very frequently is seen in every face. A little last on the part of a teaoher will forbid any such an nouncement as the following: "A com position must be-produoed by suoh and such day," a oommand that is frought witn terror to tne average school gtri or boy. But a little wise handling of the olass on part of tbe teaoher and these oareful language drills will rob that school-room speotre of all of its terrors and make it on of tbe most delightful of sohool room exeroises, all throbbing and pulsing with the life and energy of young, forming mind. Tact is everything. Jean raul Kiohter asks, "Can we too often say to the teaoher of youth that all bearing and reading does not half so muoh strengthen and delight the mind as writing and speaking ?" Partridges, Not Quails. Who does not know that only a few years back It was almost impossible to hear oar "Bob White" a favorite bird of sportsmen called anything exoept "partridge" bat now and then some knowing on ?) would be met with who would gravely- offer the informa tion "they are not partridge they are quails." - ... - la view of th fact that the above statement has been reiterated and very little notice taken of It until a good many people have ' accepted it as true and" the word quail is coming Into more frequent use It may be Interesting to note what the renown ed naturalist Audubon has to say on the subject. COMMON AMBBIOAN FABTBTXH3S, (Ortlx Virginian) Audubon, Vol. V., Pp. 58 68. edition of Geo. B. Look wood, N. Y. "Ther common name given in the Eastern and Middle Distriott of our Union to this bird is that of QuaU, but in the Western and Southern State the more appropriate appellation of- Par tride is bestowed upon it." It is men tloned a "Bob White." There you have as high authority as any .one . need ; want for the good old nam ''partridge." If In spite of that any one chooses to ate the improper term quail In speaking" of these fine birds we have nothing more to say . 4 XarriedV ' .
