THE JOURNAL. HOW KTJCH COBIT WHXIOU FLA NTt cj Sow la The Time. It Is doabtlesa tine that tbe month of March will determine the prospeets of the farmer at tbe Sooth for this year. Marob is tne month that will determine the corn area. If a large part of the farm is siren to corn, well pat into the soil, it will be a hopeful sign of tbe times. If farmers repeat the past and give this land to cotton, or pnt their corn crop into badly prepared soil, we will go through another year of depression and debt. It is not only true that tbe area glvento corn is too limited bnt the crop is frequently net properly pat In. The pressure to get to prepar ing land for cotton has generally been so great that the corn land has been neglected. Tbe best crop I ever made came from thoroughly prepared soil. broke the ground thoroughly, broadcast, with a two horse tarn plow. By the time I was ready to plant the corn a slight cruet had formed on the surface. I opened the farrow for the cora with a big broad scooter, and ran a straight subsoil plow in the bottom and covered the corn by ranniDg an Acme barrow over the surface. This management left the ground in flue tilth, and good shape for the germination of the seed and the growth of the plant. I of coarse manured the corn in the drill when planted. At the first plowing I ran next to the corn with a small scooter, and then put a broaded farrow next to that. Into this last furrow I deposited more manure just oppo site the corn aud covered with the next farrow. I think 1 foresee great benefit from the manuring given at the second plowing. Another roason for lailnre in corn erops is fonnd in slow working ihe times between plowings are too far separated. Atter the first Iplowing, tbe surface should be nightly stirred every ten days, indeed after every rain if possi ble. March is the time to begin tbe revolution in our farm work, and it remains to be seen whether we will hare more corn and less cotton Farmers, count well before you let the month pass with its golden opportunity. The Language of Monkeys. Professor Garner, who has acquired reputation as a student of tbe monkey language, proposes to visit Africa, with such appliances lor a reisdence among the gorillas win enaoie him to become acquainted with their speech, the vocabulary of which is likely to be richer than that of ordinary monkeys. He intends to occupy a large and strong iron cage, in which he .can be safe from the attacks of the powerful animals while he listens to their remarks and preserves them by the phono- graptt. Professor Garner thinks that be will be able to ascertain the views of leading gorillas with less difflcul ty and more precision than possi oie in tne case or some distinguished persons who spi with great facility on topics of vital interest.
