Evangelist Fife had a large audience Sunday afternoon and gave a moat in structive ' sermon on the Holy Spirit, emphssing in it the faot that be U as real and distinct a person as either the Father, o his son. Jesus Christ is and telling of the work of the Spirit in the hearts of men, of the need of that work and the unavailableness of preaohing except through the power and influenoe of the Spirit. The tent was crowded st night by a serious and attentive audienoe. Mr. Fife delivered a telling sermon on "The Excuses that Men Make for Not Giving Themselves to the Savior," and at its close a large number in every part of the audience arose and requested pray er for relatives and friends and about twenty sought an interest in the pray ers for themselves. Mr. Fife based his remarks on Ephe- sians 6: 17 and 2nd Timothy 2: 15, and urged working Christians In dealing; with the unconverted to rely not upon their arguments but upon the direot word of God, "riahtly dividing the word of truth." Mr. Fifo presented some of the most oommon excuses that men render and gave with each objection a number of suitable texts of soripture with whioh to meet it. He spoke of the self-right eousthose wno rely upon tneir moral ity to save them from hell; of the soeptios those who say they oan t be lieve: of the deoeived formalist or church member who is honestly de ceiyed and relying on church ordi nances or oeremonies; of thoie who urge the inconsistencies of church mem bers as excuse; of those who ur&e that they have so many things to give up; of those who say they do not feel like it; of those deeply and pungently oonyioted of sin; and of those who wish to know how to believe. The texts that Mr. Fife gave were per tinent, and a familiarity with them thus olawifled is sure to greatly increase the effectiveness ot any Christian in efforts to point men to the Savior. The text for Monday morning: was found in 1 Corinthians 3: 8, 0. "Every man shall receive his own reward so cordine to his own labor, for we are laborers together with God." The discourse was one deserving of lorjir remembranoe and calculated to work good in every class of hearers Both the time and plaoe for holding the morning meeting has been changed ; commencing .with this morning it will be held in Hanoock Street M. E. Church. The song service will begin at 9:31 o'olook and the regular setviceatlO. The change to the ehuroh Is made be oause it is more aimouit to nun audienoe hear in the-tent, and aa Mr, Fife is troubled with an affection ofthe throat the effort is trying to him. The night seryloe, however, will be con tinued in the tent. A number arose again for prayer last night. The sermon was a touching one. It was on prayer and many truths relating to it that are seldom thought of, euoh as the duty of prayers of pure thanks-giving and praise, etc, were well presented in a strong light, and Mr. Fife narrated incidents where simple, oblld-like trust was rewarded with exaot answers to prayer when it would naturally have seemed to any one that the answer to suoh a prayer was very far removed from the probable and in the oourse of the sermon Mr. Fife narrated his own conversion under the preaohing of Rev. R. G. Pierson in Wilmington. At the conclusion of the servioe an after meeting was held and muoh in terest shown by christian workers. Mr. Fife is a bold and fearless speaker, sparing sin neither in high nor low places, but however denunoia. tory of evil hie remarks may be or however severe on negleot of duty, all that he says Is spoken In good spirit and with a kindly interest that tends to oalm any feeling of antagonism that might otherwise be liable to be aroused by his plain and nnfllnobiog presents, tion of gospel truth. The large choir attends in full and their good singing from ths fine oollec tion of hymns used, in whioh they have been instructed and are now led br Mr. Bamsey.who Is an excellent . 'nger is a great help in oontiuoting the meet ings. Further Results of the Beaufort Meet- Ings. Three more of those converted at the recent revival in Beaufort united witb the Methodist church of that place Sun day, making the total-aooesaions to that ohurch as a result of the meetings, 49. Others gave their names to unite with the Baptist and Episoopal churches. These added to the first, swell the number of conversions to about 65. There were also about 40 backsliders reolaimed a wonderful work of grace. One result of the meetings was the reconciling of neighbors who bad long been estranged. Rev. J. W. Lee, who conducted most of the meetings went up to his borne at Greensboro yesterday to rait a few days. On Saturday he will go to Aahe ville and oonduot a protracted meeting of 22 days duration.
