Rain Collctre Day Discussions Interest Fully Maintained Misses Worthington and Jenkins. (SPKCUL JOURNAL COKKESPONDBNT.) ELEVENTH DAY, FBIDAY, JULY 1, 1893. YeBterday wo chronicled a bright daybut the olouds have returned after the rain. Early this morniog, perhaps about three o'olock, the wind sprung up and blew fiercely, and the rain poured down in torrents. Later, after the gueuts began to move about, the rain continued and it wau dark and damp and dismal almost beyond ex pression. A large number left on the train, a few, perhaps, on account tf the gloominess -and unoomfortableness of the surroundings, some It may be be cause they had waited all days of their appointed time, till their "change" had gone, the larger part that they mizht reach their homes in time to put things "to rights" before Sunday. But the dampness of the weather put no effectual damper over the morning musical at the hall though it so afTeoted the attendanoe that an unde vout performer, looking oyer his auaionoe, might h)vo oharao'in.-.G it by that word. I And now that wc arc upon the musio, we want to tell our readers Low for tunate is the Assembly ic having o good a musical director, as has charge of all ilB musio during the session -Miss Bessie Worthington of Rocky Mount. 8b o is a young lady well en dowed with many graces, oat only of form and feature, but of uind aaj soul her elogant fjim ar,J nltnotst radiint faoe bring in -.xceilent har mony with erous heart a gentle nature and a nen- one atteuoa upon all the duties of the DOfcitinn with rnnnntAn - I tious punctuality and fidelity, and conducts tho musio with suoh skill and grace bb evidences her natural talent and thorough culture. 8he will bn tnaoher of musio at the Statr Norm;.! and Industrial Hchool for young wo- j men at uroensboro, when it op- ns, next September. Horner, of the Horner Sobool, at Oxford, read a paper on tbe topio "Wbv teachers should read the poems of Homcr''--which had been orowded over from yesterday. It was an interesting paper, And then the real woik of the day began. It was "College Day," and Dr. Shoarer of Davidson took the chair. A paper was read by Rev. Dr. C'rowell of irinity, on "College Athletics, and at the close thorouzhlr discunsd bv President Shearer, Prof. Mamili of Illi nois, Secretary Harrell, President Winston, and President Croweli. Tbe good and the bad of college athletios were very clearly exhibited and illus trated. We will only report two things said, this by Dr. Croweli: '.hat in his judgment and acoording to his obser vation, "ten times more good than evil had resulted, ' and this by Dr. Win ston: that "in inter collegiate contests the evils mentioned would be wholly or in large part prevented if the trials were had on the oollege grounds." Ia the afternoon Prof. Currell of Davidson, presentod "The social side" of College life, and said among a hest of good things that "the Y. M. O. A. was one of the best iniluenoes upon sooial life at college." A brisk dis oussion followed engaged In by Dr. Shearer, Dr. Alexander, Dr. Croweli and Prof. Dinwiddle. Memorial exercises were held in re spect o the late Dr. J. H. Horner of the Horner eohool at Oxford. Ad dresses ' were made by Dr. Winston, Prof. Alderman, Dr. Shearer, Dr. Croweli and Prof. Brown. At night there was a presentation of the topio, "Why I went to oollege and what I got there." Dr. Winston made a rather lengthy and exooedingly in teresting address. And so the day passed. Wednesday was thought to be the red letter day, but the Interest and enjoymont of to day was 'equal and as well sustained as at that time. It was not a "blaok Friday, but a "good" Friday a day when the "stars" fought in their courses. The Colored People and the Fourtli. The oolored people have seoured tbe Far grounds and will observe the Fourth by having sports of various kinds, to whioh an admission fee of 10 oentewlUbe oharged.and thejmoncy raised will be applied to the benefit of the Colored Fob. - ' They will have horse racing at 11 a. m and 8 p.m., baseball at I p.m. and 0 p.m., and other amusements at inter vatr.
