H'u v.ein ugain today. Are you going to Ooldsboro to hear Stevenson ( The Orphan's Friend reports that every ocd is occupied in hoth huildings of the Oxford Asylum. This shows that the asylum ra getting crowded. Only tl.00 for the round trip to Oolds boro tuday. To see the next V.cc-Prcsi-dent ol the United States and hear an address from him is worth that and the little trouble it may be to go. It will be an occasion not soon to lie forgotten. On account of the very had weather the Cleveland-Carr banner presentation that was to have taken place last night was postponed. It will take place next Wed nesday. There were about fifty people in attendance at the meeting in spite of the rain. The turpentine still belonging to Major A li. Dennison, located on Trent river at the railroad crossing, took tire last night at 11:30 o'clock, but was put out by buckets of water More any serious dam ujjc occurred. I!oth fire engines respond ed but their services were not needed. A social gathering of our citizens, both ladies and gentlemen, will be held at the Y. M. '. A. Hull, Friday evening. The prime object of the meeting ia the formal introduction of ihe secretary, Mr. T. Q. Wilkinson, to our people and the wel coming of him by them to our midst. An interesting program is being arranged for the entertainment of the audience. Considering the circumstances a fairly good number of stock holders of the A. & N. C. II. went down to Morchead last night to attend the annual meeting today. Two things militated against a large attendance- the rainy weather and the Stevenson speaking today at Goldsboro. The probabilities aretlmt there will be few it any changes made. A determined mob are after a young white man named James Chatman, in Chatham county, for abduction and as sault of a young girl. He was captured in South Carolina, and it wag only through the shrewdness of the sheriff that he has been, able to evade a maddened mob of fifty men who have sworn ven geance upon the wretch, No sooner than the prisoner was placed in jail at Pitts boro than he had to be taken out and secreted in an old barn and from there to the jail at Raleigh. Wo were shown yesterday by Mr. J. T. Hall, a Jonos county, North Carolina lemon which his niece sent hia from Trenton. It was raised by Mrs. Ktnsey of that village and is as large and perfect shaped a specimen as is growq anywhere. It weighs cjer half a pound. Mr. Hall has it In his show case where any one may sec it. The tree this year bore about two do., n. If they keep all right somo of the fruit will be on exhibition at the New Heme Fair. Wrt'.is H. Drogdeu, of Wayne county, who killed his neighbor, Fabius . Ban ner, haajust been tried at Ooldsboro for the crime. The jury, after remaining out all Tnesday night, brought lu, a verdict of manslaughter with recomlncndation to mercy. There was also a large peti tion to the aaoae effect timed bv all classes of the citizena both Indies .and gentlemen. Taking , these matters into consideration, Judge H. R.
