Simpkins showed us yester day the finest bunch of pears we ever saw or ever expect to sec. -Thcre ;W(yc sev enteen on one buuch and the little twigs .unking out from within a space of 18 inches. It was almost a solid block of pears. There were at first four others on the branch then wo doubt not it was a solid block indeed. The weight of tho twenty -one pears was twenty-two pounds. They were grown by Mr. Elijah Davis, of Smyrna, on a seven-year old treo purchased from tho nursery of A. D. Pratt which Mr. Simokins and his brother represent The tree was estimated to have borne 700 of the pears this acason. They are of tba Duchess De Angoulcme variety. If it is possible to prcservo the bunch intact in alcohol or otherwise it ought to be done. It is well worthy of a prominent place at tho State Fair, tho New Berne Fair or tho World's Fair. It is a striking and convincing proof of the adaptability of the soil and climato of Eastern North Carolina to fruit growing. The spirit of emulation which prompts a farmer to display that in which he haa made a signal success is a worthy one, and if with tho display he makes known any special point to which he feels is due much of the success be is to that extent a benefactor of his fellow farmers. We hope that all the farmers of Craven and adjoining counties will remember these things and make special efforts to save specimens of all their finest products for exhibition at tho next New Berne Fair. Remember the exhibits now whilo the crops are being gathered. TRINITY COLLEGE. Programme for the Dedication of the Ground and Now Buildings at Dur ham. Prospects or tho Cholera Next Year. The London Times contains an article concerning the prospects of a cholera epidemic next year. Alter mentioning the cases constantly appearing in those cities and towns of Kussia, Austria, Hun gary and the Netherlands which were spared in August and the early part of September, the Times says: ''The reports mean that cholera is doing just what it lias always done formerly creeping quietly onward and sowing the autumnal seeds in new grounds which will burst forth luxuriantly with the advent of -'imiiier." "Tho news from Grodno means that v tern Russia up to the Prussian border an:, beyond is infected; the news from ' Mcsvi mean- that the seed is sown in tlm IJlael- :i ileliiet and the Diinuhian pro villi or. the linn from liuila I'est means th l the isolation of Galieia was an utter failure a.yi that Austria and Hungary are involved. The news from Spainlan means that the waterways from Berlin to the river Oder are infected. Scattered eases in the Netherlands tell the same tale. If precedent is of any value all those districts anil also l'l'ilmnl ml Franco will break out into a blaze in 18!)3.'' V. M. ('. A. Notice.
