The forecast which came from the weather bureau yesterday afternoon pre dieted showers, followed by fair. This encourages us to expect fair weather tonight, when if the computacions of as tronomers prove true the comet will be at the nearest point to the earth and pre sent a beautiful sight. A meteoric show er is also expected as a result of the proximity of the comet. One astronomer, however, calculated a few days ago that the comet had already come tbe nearest that it would to the earth and was even then receding. At any rate look above tonight and see what you will see. A correspondent of the Wilmington Messenge-gives the following additional acts in reference to it : About the year 1886 a novel and in teresting fact became well established, to wit : That certain comets are followed by streams of meteors which move along the orbit "of the comet of that system. And so it came to pass that, as it seemed certain that liicla s comet had ceased to exist as such, it might appear as a stream ol meteors ami produce a shower on or about November 27th, 1872, the day when I he earth reaches the point in her orbit intersected by that ot tbe comet. And if so, the meteors would all rui bale from a certain point in space apparently situated 111 the con- tellalion Andromeda, the position of the point of the orbit of Biela' comet nearest the earth. It was therefore pre dicted that on the night ol November 27th, 1872, a meteoric shower would take place and that the meteors would all radiate from Andromeda which predic tion was fully verified in every respect. iigani on inc ztli November. 1M85. another shower, more splendid than tbe imr occurred, 32.000 meteors having been counted between the hours of 6 D.m. iml II p.m. and all from ths same con sul slion. And I may add that the ex traordinary display of meteors here on Wednesday night last was from the same meteor stream anil radiated Irom Andro- neda ; no less than 3,500 to 4,000 having 11 i n seen between 6 o'clock p. m. and 11 1 clock p. in. Whether it be followed by 1 grainier display on Sunday night next icmaiiis to he sceu. but it is probable. Church Services. Centenary M. K. Church: Rev. R. A. Willis, pastor. Winston Receives Another Heavy Blow Loss, $140,000; Insurance $100,000. Hotel Zinzendorf, recently built by the West End Land Company of Winston at a cost of $140,000, was totally de stroyed by fire at 11 o'clock Thursday. the contents were mainly saved. Itie hotel was one of the best in the South. The fire originated in the rear of the building by the explosion of a gasoline stove in tbe steam laundry. A heavy breeze was stirring and the building be ing a wooden structure the llamcs spread rapidly. The two fire companies were on hand but for lack of water were pow erless. It required hard work to save other buildings. Insurance $100,000. Some of the furniture was saved but broken up. The trunks of several drum mers and boarders were lost. The build ing was owned by the West Knd Hotel & Land Company, of which W. A. Whitaker is president. The hotel man agement was preparing, when the tire broke out, a Thanksgiving dinner which would surpass anything of the kind ever given in the city. Business men there say that this fire is the heaviest blow Winston has ever received. Atj a meeting of the directors ol the West End Hotel and Land Company, held at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon, it was resolved to be the sense of the board to re-build the Hotel Zinzendorf as soon as practicable. An Uncharitable Discrimination Editok Journal: Prov. xxi:13 says whoso stoppcth his ears at the cry of the poor, be also shall cry himself but shall not be beard. Ministers of the Gospel in the large majority of instances are dependant upon voluntary contributions of the member ship and the friends of the church for their sustanence and most of their time is taken up in visiting the sick and the poor without one cent of remuneration for it. 80 when they start to their Presbyleries, Conventions or Conferances, it is all that they can do to make a balance sheet of their expenses during the year aud some, times have actually to borrow to take them there and back, so it is no humiliat ing thing to say of many of them the foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests but the majority of them have not a legal place to lay their heads, and yet the railroads make less deduction to them than they do to seekers of pleasure, who in contrast with God's ministers are able to pay regular fare anywhere for their entertainments. On Friday night the fure to Goldsboro and back and go into the show added was $2.00 from New Hernc for worldly pleasure; while $3.15 is charged in De cember for the ' embasadors of the Lord Jesus to go to their Conference and back. Now we ask anybody and everybody is this right? Prov. 22:16: "He that oppresseth the poor to increase his richcB and he that giveth to the rich shall come to want." J. F. II. Church Notices. Sunday service for Hancock Street Methodist Church. Sunrise prayer meeting charged to 7 o'clock. Preach ing at 11 a. m., and at 7 1-2 p. m., by the pastor, Rev. Jno. F. Butt. Sunday-school at 3 p. 111. The steward's meeting for Hancock Street Methodist church has been changed from Wednesday night to Fri day night to meet the convenience of some of the body. The confcrancc year is near to a close and every one of this body is expected to be present and do his duty to get all the financies in a good shape. , Mt. Calvary Temple has been made much more comfortable by two good stoves and white washing all over in the inside and a good saw dust floor, and it is expected that a large audience will be there at Sunday-school at 9 a. m., and at the mass meeting at 4 1-4 p. m. Some of the pastors in the city have promised to be there and take part. Rev. Jno. F. Butt will preach for the colored people there on Monday night. Some white people will attend also. Baptist Mission Meeting. At 6:30 P. M. Sunday the Baptist Church was taxed almost to its utmost capacity. Mr. John C. Whitty, of New Berne, who Is chairman of the Executive committee of the Atlantic Baptist Asso ciation, to which thif church belongs, was present to present the claim of associa tion missions to tbe church. Mr. Whitty is a man of sterling qualities, and in addi tion is an earnest Christian. He has held the position of chairman of the Executive committee for several years, and therefore has a thorough knowledge of the needs of the work, which he presented to the congregation in a very earnest speech of about 85 minutets, wuicli was attentively listened to. At the close of his address he asked for individual pledges for the work; and with the assistance of the pas-, tor succeeded in getting $71.00 pledged. Carteret (Beaufort) Ti mes.
