Best col., to le hung for murdering his wife by poison. An effort is lieing made to have the Governor commute his sentence to imprisonment for life. Hon. W. T. Caliowentup to Raleigh yesterday to work in his behalf. If the Governor con cludes to stand "hands off," Best's time on earth is short. The Baptist State Convention met Wed nesday night in Raleigh, 208 delegates beingpreaent. Dr. R. II. Masb, of Or ford, called the convention to order as president, and Rev. Dr. J. S. Hardaway preached the opening sermon. The at tendance of prominent preachers both from this State and other States is large, and the principal Baptist, papers of the South have representatives there. Wayne county's tux collector went to Raleigh Monday and has made a full set tlement of taxes due the State from that county, amounting to $14,710.40. He was the first in the State to settle, but the law will not allow tho others to be far behind him. So if you want to save both yourself and your excellent sheriff trouble, call at the court house and pay without further delay. Remember your city taxes also. Tax Collector Wallace is waiting in his office for all money duo. Q The ladies of the Presbyterian sewing society are making an unusual effort to have their Xmas Bazar surpass any of former years. They will have a large and varied assortment of useful and orna mental Xmas gills, souvenirs of hand painted china fired by an expert, such as after dinner coffees, pin trays, and numerous other things. W. Smallwood, M. II. Carr, W. 0. Brewer and J. A. Meadows. Ordered, That the poll tax charged to II. P. Dougherty, Township No. 3, for 1892, be remitted, he being over 50 years of age. Ordered, That Tims. Bryan be hired to Jos. Kinscy for (i months at the rate of $6.00 per month, upon his givii.g satis factory security for said hiring pursuant to order of the court. Whereas, Amos. W. Conner, elected on the 8th day of November, 1892, Coroner of Craven county, having failed to present his official bond for said office on the first Monday iu December, 1892, as required by law, it is Ordered, That the said office of Coro ner of Craven county be and hereby is declared vacant.
