Mr. Blaine is no worse, there is no apparent change in his condition but as he is suffering from briglits disease, Ins ultimate recovery is not looked for. Have yon yet handed in a list of names of people that you know who would be good ones to send Fair premium lists to, to Mr. Clias. Reizcnstcin who is engaged in mailing them? Rev. J. M. Rose of Pine Level, Johnson county, who has been spending a few days in the city, left yesterday for his home. He will however return shortly to enter upon mission in the country neai New Berne, that portion along the line of the A. & N. C. It. R. from Croatan to Do ver being themaiu points. Ho will la bor at least among four congregations. We nnticc some very fine sawed shin gles on tho steamer Howard wharf yester day which were attracting attention on account of their excellence in shape, fin ish and general make up. A portion ol tbem were from the mill of Messrs. Qal lup and Kehoe at Quaker Bridge and others from the floating shingle mill on the Sadie M. Rand which is operating very satisfactory up Trent river. Advertising space in the Fair edition of the Journal is already being sought. That issue will afford an exceptionally fine opportunity for1 advertisers on account of its being sent out to to many selected names and ulso on account of so many copies of the paper being kept for good lengths ol time that the possessors may jctresn tueir memories on too special in formation it wilt contain". After the 1st., of January the registration fees on all letters or packancs will be eight cents instead of ten. The Colum bia adhesive stamps will also go into use on that day, aud be used just through that year. They will be issued in all de nominations. They differ in size, and form from those now in use. Each stamp bears a design commenorativo of the dis covery of America by Columbus. Mr. Lee Churchill has finished putting up the new iron front fence of the Baptist church, which was ordered through Messrs. Disotway & Churchill. That church now has a fence to be proud of. It it a beautiful one, which will doubtless serve the present membership as long at any of them live and which will not be subjecting them to annoyance by needing repairs or rebuilding. The fence is built from a turn of 500 left to the church by Mrs. C. E. Patterson, and it bean an in. scription to that effect in her memory, Iron fences are expensive, but, when of proper' design they are attractive, and wbenthe-lomj servicr that they give it considered and the short one of wooden fences, it might not be extravagant for them to come into more general use than they are. . i . frvro( the wont daces m the Quak great- advantage but tnere are now auntber. , of places that should receive similar - attention without . any delay, Patten over the road tell us that they do no ' kno' ;of iny' pttbUtf highway on which a little judicious work would tell to'ttrongly. Miss Rosa Ricaud, is visiting friends in the city. Miss Georgia Mayo, of Portsmouth N. C, arrived to visit the family of Mrs. Theresa Roberts. Mr. H. D. Wood returned home last night from Winston to spend Christmass. The following students came in to spend the holidays at their homes: Mr. James Simmons, from Horner's military Acade my, Oxford, and Messrs. Peter Hill and Geo. J. Dudley, from Davis military school, Winston. Mr. E. L. Morton, State Senator from New Hanover district, who has been spending a few days in the city in the in terest of the Tide Water Oil Company of Wilmington, left yesterday morning Conference Assessments. The assessments made by the late ses sion of the North Carolina conference on the nine distiicts composing it as pub lished in the Christian Advocate foot up $43,611. The money raised by the assessments is to be apportioned to vaiions objects as follows: For Trinity college, $5,000; do mestic missions, $8,525; foreign missions, $13,500; missionary debt, $5,610; church extension, $3,000; bishop's salary, $1,876; conference claimants,- $5,500; Paine and Lane Institutes, $600. The amount allotted to be raised in the New Berne tlistr ct is $5,700, dVded be tween the various objects as follows: Trinity college, $064; domestic missions, $1,124; foreign missions, $1,770; mission ary debt, $730; church extension, $336; bishop's salary, $249; conference clai mants, $732; Paine and Lane Institutes, $78. Have We Such a Citizen. An cxchanirc states that a citizen of Madison county has built a largo brick building dcsig.-.cd to be used as a fuctory and has offered it free of rent for one year, as an inducement for the coming of factory. We wonder where a match for this display of interest can be found. Any community ought to appreciate every industrial cnterpi'.sc, to seek the prosper ity of those already established and to labor for tho establishment of others. New Berne has ono industry, the knitting mill that has just been started. Its suc cess and consequent future growth, de mands to a very great extent upon the people of New Berne, and those who trade here. It other merchants of the city and tributary country, give the New Berne fuctory the preference whenever they make an order for goods in its line, and our citizens generally do likewise in purchasing for use a bright'future for the factory is sure to ' follow. Remember home industries, uuil do all you can to build up your town. Close of tho Business School. The business school which Mr. li. B. Holloway has been running in the city closed yesterday with the award of four gold medals to those who had been tak ing penmanship lessons. There were two classes of the students one was made up of pupils from the Collegiate Institute, the other from the citizens at large. To each of these classes two medals were awarded, one to the pupil whose pen manship was the best, the other to the ono who had made the greatest improve ment during the course of lessons. Among those connected with the Insti tute, Miss Bertha Tucker was awarded the medal for the best penmanship, and Mr. Lawis Swindell for the greatest im provement. In the citizens' class, Mr. A Leary was awarded tho medal for the best writing, and Mr. N. F. Vincent for the greatest improvement. The judges met, examined the writing of tho pupils and made their decision yesterday afternoon, and last night the presentation of the medals was made by Rev. Rufus Ford at the Collegiate Insti tute in the presence of pupils and friends. The medals were pretty in design and appropriately inscribed, with a blank space for the name of the winner.- In addition to those to whom the med alt were presented, the judges deemed the following worthy of special mention for good penmanship: Misses Ida F, Wayne, Bessie Tucker, Fannie Trenwith and Annie Abbott, and Messrs. J. C. Gas- kins and John M Erdman. Special mention for Improvement waa made of Fred. W. Richardson, J. F. Har- gett, C. J. McCarthy, John Erdman, H. Roper, Wesley Foreman, John h. Russell, Sam. Like a leaf on the tree Is this life to me, In the spring, it buds; In the summer, it grows; But when Autumn's cold blasts, O'er the branches play fust, The leaf once so gay Is a thing of t ne past. So my life had its budding Its blossom, its growth, In infancy weakness. Its pleasurers of youth, Its stcrnnesss, of manhood, To bear life's cold wave. Soon its Autumn must follow, Then, the Winter, its grave. The leaf had its purpose As it clung to the tree, And was cheered in its work By the bird and the bee, When its mission was ended, It, its tcndrills unwound, And the leaf, from the branches, Falls, tenderly, down. Will the mission of life In me be fulfilled Ere the eye lose its lustre? The pulse liccomc stilW When the time comes that I Must let go of earth's tree, Will my tailing to earth, lie as peaceful as thee? Suggested by picking in a fillen leaf. List of Letters.
