Journal- I didn't promise when saw you a little while betore leaving, that I would write you, but as you inti mated that would be a very proper thing to do, I will try occasionally to give you few "Notes by the way. When I left New Berne a considerable part of the people were on runners. An unusually large installment of the beau tiful snow for this latitude had made sleighing (and snowballing) possible. The turn outs if not elegant were unique and ingenious the tavorite style seeming to be made up by removing the wheels from a buggy and substituting a pair of plank runners, a foot wide, (.and six or eight feet long. With a good team in front, a lively crowd of boys and girls within, a dozen, two along side, two along side, two on their sleds, bitched behind, with the tintlmnabulation or the bellB all over, and a shower of snowballs, all round, tbey seemed to be having a very enjoyable season. The cars left on time, and came near leaving your correspondent at the same time. The hurry incident to Christmas business being over, it was not considered necessary to run the train, so it was allowed to walk, and sometimes by way of divenifying the fact, to creep. Even then we managed to git ahead of "time," and at every station waited for him to come np a thing which be would never have done for us, for the old and true proverb says he "waits for no man. The passengers; tuougn not numerous were all of the "male persuasion,1' except one nice little woman, a bride of two or three days, who traveled a few miles with us, going to her new home. An parently, to her. "Life was like a story, without a sob or sigh.'' We have no augury of ill, in word or thought, for those to whom "tne lines nave lauen in pleasant places." Sometimes, at least, the pathway seems to be strown with roses roses which conceal no thorns. At one place where we "waited, we saw the snow flying at an unusually lively rate. A young fellow was set upon by four bouncing country girls. After a lit tie maneuVring they pulled pulled his hat off and dashed av avalanche of snow over his bead and down his neck. He took his "punishment" bravely and in rood humor, nnd had at least the advan tage of firing into the flock, and as the bov said in telling nis remarxaDie iuck in shooting, it was "every pop a pigeon, finally we reached uoiasooro an sound and on time. Through the hsze and show we made our way to the Eennon Hotel formerly the Geyory, with some what of a changed appearance, a new name and a new proprietor, it is very much the same home nice place. - After supper, we spent the evening very cosily, and before time tor retiring the clouds all clear uway and the moon reigns again queen of the night, and an earnest ot bright days to come.
