The hour of the arrival of the train can be read from the sidewalk in the tele graph office window every afternoon at 5 o'clock. This will save the trouble of seeking the information inside. The snow came betore the cargo of shell rock brought to the city the first of the week was distributed and stopped the work, but another cargo arrived yes terday by the steamer Trent and the work will go right on. It is a pity to sec such enterprises, each of which is so important to the city at variance. It is to be hoped that cool, sober counsel will prevail and the matter be quietly adjusted in some way satisfac tory to each side without :i tight in the courts. The attempt to make a new county out of a portion of Craven, Pitt and Greene counties should be stopped short. The tendency to cut the State up into a number of small counties deserves check ing. This county is not so large as to be unweildy and no more should be taken from it for the formation of a new county unless real need arises for such a county. The advertisement ot Mr. Geo. II. Advertising Property for Taxes. 8heriff Lane is giving a warning notice that the time for indulgence to tax pay ers has passed, and that unless delin quents settle at once he will have to advertise the property for sale. This is an unpleasant duty and Sheriff holds back from the performance of it as long as possible, but tl.c law is imperative and he has to carry out its provisions. Let all come forward promptly and save themselves costs and the sheriff the worry of having to resort to measures that he tries in every reasonably way to avoid. I'reshj terlal Changes. The Daves Family. We have been handed a pamphlet, pre pared by Major Graham Daves and his brothel. Professor Dave?, of Baltimore. containing the family tree. It is unpre tentious as a literary work, but is well written and exceedingly interesting. It shows wonderful industry and research and is an example of commendable pride in deserving ancestors. Capt. John Daves the grandfather of these gentlemen was a meritorious con tinental officer and raised him self by bis talent and patriotism to con spicuous influence. The men of this family have always married intelligent women. That is the simple physiologi cal explanation of the survival of the fit test. As tlie only anstrocracy of a repub lic is that of intellect and culture our young men sbould think less of mere puysicai oeauiy anu more ot mental gilts. We think that Major Daves, who did the most of this work deserves praise for his very thoruogb reversal of American usage, which looks out only for the dol lars and lets tho ancestors shift for them selves. Intelligent and cultured names behind us are a much nobler inheri tance than mere material wealth. New Berne has had many of these names, bnt they are being swiftly covered up and forgotten, and soon Wni. Gaston and John Stanly will be her only historical n vestment.
