Next week we will issue the special Fair edition of the Journal for wide gra tuitous distribution. It will contain the premium list and much other matter ot great interest and importane. The best wayfor this to be'effected, is for all our citizens who have such friends and acquaintences, to furnish us a list of them. A few names nave already been handed in. We will gladly mail the pa pers free of charge, to those we are asked to send to. Do not be bashful about the list, make it as large as you choose we need the names and it is one way that you can do the Fair a service and favor and your friends at the same time. This special issue of the Journal gives advertisers splendid services, for the pa pers will be plentifully distributed among good people in all neighboring counties. Regular advertisers will '.et all the ad vantages the special edi'.ion offers with out charge. Others wishing to make use of its colunius, should see us immediately about the mutter nsjwe are now at work on it. Immensity of the F:sh Business. The results attained indicates improve- ent year by year in the fishing industry our waters. The Morehead City News tells that the lnrgest catch of fish ever mndc in those waters was mnde last Sat day by Messrs. Aleck Lewis, Charles Willis and Rowland Phillips. At a sin gle drop of their nets they caught 10,000 pounds of fish. Just think of securing fifty barrels of as delicious meat aa grows by simply dropping a net overboard and pulling it out of the water. The News also tells of a fine ship ment of fish from Morehead the following Monday morning: Three cars went off well loaded with the finny thousands. M. Arthur &Co. sent off 8,000 pounds: W. L. Arendell, 8,000; Watson, Daniels & Bell, 21,000 ; Ed. Taylor & Co., 4.000 Willis Brothers about 0,000; Hancock A Co., 1,600; J. W. Willis, 4,000; G. N. Ives about 5,000; C. W. Willis 6,000; Eugene Arthur several thousand, and some large shipments from others. There was also fifteen or eighteen thousand pounds shipped by Beaufort sellers. To give a faint idea of what a grand source of food supply the fisbiug Indus try is, we call attention to the fact that this shipment of fiih was sufficient in quantity (allowing one pound of fish to each individual) to havo furnished a men I to the entire combined population of Wil mington, Raleigh, Charlotte, Winston Asheville. New Berne, Goldsboro and Durham ! All visitors to the New Berne Fair which iiegins Monday, February 20th will be able to view in orderly arrangement fine specimens of the various kinds of fish that abound in East Carolina waters to gether with with a full display of every kind or apparatus used in taking them besides the native nsn, taxiderinized spec imens of foreign varieties will also be shown. No better opportunity for in vestigating the industry can be found Whether your object is pleasure or to se cure valuable information, it will pay you to examine the fish department of ths Fair carefully and thoroughly. Sugar Bteta and Beet Sugar. We have several times shown the possi bilities of sugar beet culture and beet sugar manufacturing in New Berne and vicinity. This morning we give a short article from the Elizabeth City Econo milt on the same subject: 'The subject of making euirar from the sugar beet lias long been upon tue public mind inn rn.fi lnaustrv nas thrown trom small beginnings to be one of the most important industries in the civilized world. Germany leads in the manufac ture of sucaj from beets, and we believe the quantity ot sugar now made there from the saccharine ot the beet is greater tnan that manufactured trom the sugar cane syrup. "Recently a factory for the n.anufacturo of sugar from beets, has been started in Staunton, Va., which will he the pioneer of beet sugar manutacture in the South At present there are only nve or six lac- lories lor making Buaar from beets, in the United States but in Europe they are numerous and increasing.' "The yield of sugar beets to the acre average about fourteen tons, sometimes twenty-two tons are obtained. At the factory they sell Tor in average ofB4.su a ton, which, at an average yield of fif teen ton to the acre, would make the gross value of the crop 167.60 per acre, and putting tns cultivation ana otner incidental expanses or tne crop at au er acre, would lesve a net pront ot 87.60 per acre. Let some of our enter prising monied men lk into the sub ject and invest in a beet sugar factory and our farmers mignt p rentable atveru- iy in sir crops oj raising ragir ma, If a double dally mail Is impractleeable one of our prominent citizens suggests the advisability ot frying a daily freight traia furnishing also passenger and mall faoili ties, toran just opposite in time to that ol the regular mall and passenger train schedule. We have bug been extremely anxious for a double service believing that it would result In great good, not only to Nsw Berne bnt all along the line. , - Proposals Waated. ; ' Proposals to furnish water to the city of New Berpe, will be received up to ana including January oist uvo. . v .
