Our citizens have acted moat nobly in their efforts to releive any distress that comes to their knowledge. The public fund subscribed is by no mwins the ex tent of what has been done. All classes of those who were ab!o and especially some of our noble women have made great sacrifices upon their home supplies of clothing and provisions, the quiet method that has been pursued iu innu merable instances would swell to a lai;.e sum. Another very commendable, service is that of those who have given up then private business in making the public distributions. What a Dorse Can do on Different Roads. One of the best arguments for good roads is contained in a calculation recent ly published in one of the Engineering papers. It states that on tho worst roads, not muddy, but sandy, a horse can draw only twice as much aa he carry on his back; on a fair earth road, three and a half times as much; on a good macailcmized road, nine times as much; on a smooth plank road, twenty-five times aa much; on a stone track -way, thirty-three times as much and on metal rails, fifty-four times as much. The men who use the country roada can therefore sco the advantage of bav ing them in good condition. Three more car loads of wood arrived yesterday. A largo lot isr expected to day. r .L Messrs. E. Some of the people there have been reduced to considerable straits. There is not a wood yard in the city that has a cord of wood left. Tho con- BOmption has largely increased and the usual way for ectting it V re the rivers .re unavailable frozen up. The rail road is the only dependence.
