The election of officers will take place and full atten dance is earnestly requested. 'Two tug boats went to the bottom in Delaware river Thursday, having been crushed by the ice. Both vessels are re. garded as total losses. Other disasters occurred to vessels but not severe enough to cause the destruction of any others. A flock of about 20 wild geese lit and commenced feeding in Mr. J. L. Rhem's turnip patch yesterday, a quarter of a mile from bis gin bouse. A boy fired- at them and. after circling around they went over to Mr. N. Tisdale'i field. Being fired at again, they departed for other pas tures.- -j,, ' . , The Y. M. C. A baa done a splendid Work during the past : week. With the means furnished them, they hare distrib nted wood and provisions to about' sixty families, and they bavs endeavored to be very cautions in knowing that every ease was worthy of need. A very large number of people enjoyed tho ekatir vesterday. Numbers of them were on Treut river west of the railroad and that river was crossed by many it being only about three quarter of a mile wide. The favorite resort however, was Neuse river at the foot of Broad street. Con venient to reach and well adapted in every way to the r on. the v.tde expense of frozen waters was thronjrud all day long with a hundred or two people. Business and professional mun.young men and maidens, and children all getting the most fun possible ou. i tho remarkably good opportunity anV ied for this kind of pleasure. Some were guing singly others ia pairs, and others in greater numbers even up to lines of seven or eight with hands joined. There were numliers of sleds and rockers out also some propelled v.r.U pointed sticks by the occupauts some pusncd or pulled y ethers. It was am interesting sight. No doubt very many would have treasured a photograph of the scene had one been taken as a prized souvenir ot this memorable winter. Mr. J. r. laylor photographed a number of pluces around the city Friday while they were beautiful with sleet and snow and it the skating is resumed Monday and a lame crowd gathers hn expects to take the animated scene. Mr. Horn Nunn left to visit relatives in Lenoir county. Mr. S. Z. Waters has returned Irom Pantego. He reports that a man by the name of Makely, drove a horse and bug gy across ai. arm of Albemarle sound, on the ice, a distance of twelve miles. CapL F. R. McConnell of the Virginia Dredging Company passed through Inst it euroute to Cape Lookout via More- head to get off two of their scows which broke loose from the tut,' on Sunday the 15th inst and were driven up on the beech. This is remarkable on a stream betwen one and two miles wide, but a more sur prising bit of news is conlaiued in a letter to Mr. J. B. Clark. J. A. Holmes, State Geol ogist, Upon the Public Roads of the State. The first order of business then taken up was the presentation of the pap r bv Prof. Holmes, which was outlined by him with brief extracts. The paper showed careful preparation and was a very instructive and valuable report on the materials for road construction in North Carolina, as well as giving ths loss to the State on account ot bad roads. Mr. Chas. McNamee, of Asheville, dis cussing the subject of the benefit of good roads, read extracts from the report ol the various United States Consuls abroad, gining the experience of other countries with good and bad roads. Mr. MoNa mee's words were listened to with much interest. Resolutions were then offered and referred t the committee as follow. Messrs. R H. Lewis, Dale, Gaster. Mr. S. H. Hilton, ot Mecklenburg, re ferred to the fact that is nu, ty had the first road law in the State a;.u called on Capt. YT. E. Ardrey, who had been largely instrumental in its passage to explain its provisions. After a very in teresting uescriptiou ot the working ot this law by Capt. VV . L. Ardrey, which deserved and received marked attention, Mr. Hilton submitted a paper showing the detailed operations of the Mecklen burg road law, the moans at hand for conductIrp the road improvement, and the practical advantages the system had proved to the people of his county. Resolutions were unm ottered ny Messrs. R. M. Douglass of Greensboro, J. Wooten, Ashley Home, R. P. McAnally, and F. H. Busbee and were referred to the committee. Prof. J. M. Bandy ot Trinity College, presented a valuable paper on road con struction. Interesting debates were then listened to and participated in by Messrs. J. A. Bryan of new Bcrno, F. II.
