The News also mentions the opening of the public school on Tuesday the 14th inst. Rev. J. T. Abernethy is principal and Mr H. O. Pincr, 'assistant. It is to continue about lour months. Hoke Smith and Judge Hoke judge w. it. UoKe who is now pre siding in our Superior court is a near re lationofMr. Hoke Smith of Atlanta, whom President Cleveland has just ap pointed to a position in his cabinet. Mr. Smith is a North Carolinian, a son of Professor Smith formerly of the State University, who will! be affectionately remembered by Chapel Hillians as "Old ligc. l was through his wile who was Miss Brent Hoke that the relationship of Mr. Smith to Judge Hoke came. Mr. Smith is a man of remarkable- ability, and he has made a reputation in his new home, Atlanta, where his paper tho Atlanta Journal maintains a foremost stand even alongside the powerful At lanta Constitution, and yet despite his great success. Mr. smith is a young man only 37, an unusually youthful age for a cabinet officer. Back In New Berne. Mr. Goodwin, mate of the schooner Predmore and Messrs. Jas. and B. B. Lane ana Willie Wilburn who were on the schooner Predmore when she Btruck on Brant Island shoals have got back to their homes in this city, having come over Irom Washington. Capt. R, E Hudson and wife, who were aboard at the time are still in Washington. Mr. L,ane tells ns that in abaut 3 min utes after the vessel struck there was considerable water in the cabin. Thi was about half past six o'clock Friday evening, the lutn inst. Those aboard hurriedly took to the boat and the night being very dark both cloudy and foggy they rowed until near midnight without knowing where they were going. At one time they come near being swamped by getting among the breakers. At last seeing the light in the light house, they made for it, and remained there until a passing Vessel took them to Washington N. 0. together witn some things which they had saved from the vessel by going back to her with the Ughthou hosts. Turner Morehead & Co., proprietors of the Lcaksville cotton and woolen mills loci led near Lcaksville. N. C, have sold out the plant, machinejy, stock and good will of the concern to the Cone Exporting and Commission Company, otherwise known as the Cone combine or Southern plaid trust. The terms of tlie side have not been and may never be made public, but it is understood that the Cone trust will take possession t once and will immediately proceed to enlarge the works, and will utilize the entire Smith river water- power at or near the junction of Smith and Dun rivers.
