Mr. McSorley will be on hand and ready
which was
facturing enterprises and especially
cotton factories.
He tells us that in his whole district
from Durham and Fayetteville eastward
40 counties there are only 8 such fac
tories, an average of only one .factory to
five counties while on the other hand to a
central district of 21 counties of the State
of which he was formerly manager there
are 28, more than average of one to every
county.
He mentioned moreover that Charlotte
alone alone has 7 cotton factories in it
and that at Mount Holly there are 7
within a radius of 8 miles, lacking only
one of equalling the number in this entire
present district.
He says moreover, that at Charlotte
after the first factories were started there
was no trouble to raise more money for
additional ones the demand for stock in
one of the later started ones was so great
that shares were sought after
the stock was all taken and earlier sub-
subscribers to it cut down their number of
shares as a favor, to admit others desirous
of investing in the enterprise.
Mr. riariey says that wherever he goes
he finds the factories paving and he finds
that every business is quickened by their
presence. The operatives have steady
work. They constantly have ready mon
ey to spend with grocery men, butchers
and for farm produce for the table; they
lurnish their homes better, this makes
good times for the furniture dealer, and
dry goods stores likewise come in for the
full share of the benefits.
The Wilmington Messenger in a recent
discussion of this subject said :
Will it pay to have small cotton fac
tories ? Connecticut is a flourishing state

industries. There is no doubt that Wil
