HAMOOCK Proprietor, Local Heparter. WBntsrel :" i ostofflce at few Berne S. 0 as Becon 1-,'nil .o atter. KEFOKX- For several years "Ileiorm" has been the Klogan of Democracy and the key note of tlie popular re frain. Reform in Government cannot be the work of a moment, but it must advance along the line of progres sive developrntnt with the subtilitj of the serpent ami the innocency ol the dove. The tariff must be reformed, but it must be cautiously done, so as not to revolutionize business, but gradually bring it into legitimate channel-!. If it is objected that nothing has been done towards the repeal of the McKiniey bill, it may be answered that preparation is being made and on the meeting of Congress in regular session 4s bill will be introduced having for its object suL'li reform in the tariff as will comport with the platform of theparty, the exigencies of the times and the demands of the people The agitation of pension reform eays the Baltimore News, is be ginning to bear frnit, and the first step has been taken towards purg ing the pensi )n lists of the names fraudulently enrolled thereon. The Acting Pension Commissioner has within the last few days sent out circular to all special examiners from which the following is takeD) "The numerous complaints re ceived by the Pension jJurean lead to the belief that the names ot many persons not entitled have been placed upon the pension rolls through fraud and deceit. Special examiners are therefore directed while engaged upon their regular worn, to makecaretul and jadicion inquiry in their respective districts as to the existence of such pen sionerH- The result ot these in quiries should be submitted by letter, in which should be folly set fortn the circumstances connected with any fraudulent pension niiprouer allowance or excessive rate." The effect of this order, if it is conscientiously carried out by the special exameners, will be to ex puoge from the lints the names of thousands of undeserving pen sioners, fraudulently enrolled under the administrations of Tamer and llaum. There can be no objection to well regulated system of pensions. If a man has been disabled while in the service of the country, he has a claim for cupport which no reasonnMi) man will dispute. If he was no' iln iMed, but has his liealjli and can earn his living as be did before he enlisted be taruihheH In own honor and tha' of his comrades in arms by demand ing a pension. Mr. Cleveland understands the pension question very thoroughly and there is every reason to be- live tli it it will find its solution and adjustment during the present a lmim.itra'ioii. Other reformfl will come in their. order Pet lection is not to be expect ed in any adininintratiorj, but there are many indecations that Mr, Cleveland and bis Cabinet are genuine reformers and will do all Id their power to meet the demands of the times aLd the expectations of the people. column of apery recent Issue of the Caucasian.' The North Caro- linan. How is this! Who is the writer of the artiole in the Canoaslant Is it possible that it can be Mr. Bat leif We are accustomed to regard him as a partisan and an extremest bnt we are not prepared to consider him a deliberate calumniator of his state or of the seotion of whioh it is a component part It is strange that a man who aspires to leader ship can write in such terms of his people.
